It probably would work to follow a Twitter-like @username scheme.
Ms. Eliana Tamerin

It should be painfully obvious by now that I don't respond to support PMs. Don't send me PMs for support. They will be ignored and deleted, post on the Support Boards to get support.

For the twitter-illiterate.

The syntax you are referring to is like this?
Code: [Select]
@username messageor (for usernames that have spaces)
Code: [Select]
@"username spaced" message
Ie:
Code: [Select]
@"Eliana Tamerin" Whassup???

I forgot that twitter usernames are all one word.

We could try to regex the names, so that @Eliana Tamerin would work the same as @Nathaniel, but that might slow things down. However, quotes would probably be unfamiliar and uncomfortable to most users.

Then again, we could always use SMF's built-in name finder to facilitate the whisper tool. It would just be more fun to have a @username system, would increase the 'cool' factor. And @username is simpler and easier to type in one message.

Quotes will have to be used for any usernames that have spaces.

This function defines allowed usernames: registerMember (Subs-Members.php)

This function will give us the relevent user: findMembers (Subs-Auth.php)

Alternatively, we could use:

@user&name message

or

@user=name message

Both would be good alternatives to users when quotes are not intuitive.

This would be a good alternative to users when quotes are not intuitive. And the equals is far easier for the average user to type than an ampersand.

Just so we don't forget:

telnet style
Code: [Select]
@user name=message

But had space character names? Like "Eliana Tamerin". We need seperator. Am i wrong ? :S

Well, the discussion on this issue is also in the topic below:
http://simpleportal.net/index.php?topic=3568.0

Looks like we might go with this format:
Code: [Select]
@user: message
ie.
Code: [Select]
@Eliana Tamerin: Wassup?
@Nathaniel: Wassup?
@Özgür: Wassup? How's it going?

It does look the best...

My suggestion is "|" character. Because ":" is meaning in some definition&description sepearator in some language. So "@Nathaniel: What's up?" Seems like this is Nathaniel words. But if "@Nathaniel|You're right but i'm confused." more good then.
Only suggestion =)

Maybe we can add auto suggestion too ? Like pm sending. (I know more javascript is not good everytime. but this should be nice)

Well, "|" would work, but ":" and then a space (": ") looks better, although that is just an opinion. "=" could look better as "@user=message" as well.

The main reason I am going with ": " at the moment, is that people suggested that it looks better. I personally don't mind that much.

Auto suggestion may get added, it was suggested in the related topic.

What if, for the sake of looks and functionality, it is stores as a | but then on output, a simple preg_replace function or str_replace could change | into : ?
Here to help who I can.
