No need for a mod...

Depends on what permissions and groups you already have set up. There are several ways.

Easy ways:
1. If registered users have permission to use the shoutbox you need to make a new group - deny that group shoutbox permission and add the troublesome users to that group.

2. The shoutbox has to be in a block. If you want to you can make a group and add the troublesome users to it and again deny access for that group to the block. But this way they will not be able to see the shoutbox.

Effect is the same but No1 slightly better as they can see the block for the shoutbox. Unfortunately there is an odd message saying it doesnt exist.
New basic group based off some other you have or regular users- add those people to it. In the shoutbox setup use custom permissions and deny access to the shoutbox for that group. You will have to set permission to allow for all other groups.

I must be stupid, because I can't figure out how to do that.

I see no way to deny access.

If I make a new group and not allow them to see the shoutbox, then the post count group gives them access.

If there is a way to deny, would you please point me to it.

THANKS!

NEVERMIND ....... Had WAY too many "test failed" errors to uninstall.

I will just do without.

Not difficult! Look at this guys recent topic about uninstalling.

http://simpleportal.net/index.php?topic=11083.0

In the Packages folder look in 'backups'. You will see a list there of all the zip files for changes each time a mod was installed. In the package manager just uninstall each mod in the reverse order (latest first). If you did not do any/many hand code changes then everything should install without errors.
When you get to simple portal it will uninstall easily I think. Worth the trouble to upgrade.

Then make your new group, in the shoutbox setup use 'custom' permissions and set to deny for that group. Add them to that.
Its not the best way - its just a work around. They will see a message that the shoutbox doesn't exist rather than perhaps a message they are banned. I think Dr Deejay made a request for a ban feature in the shoutbox.

Actually that's an idea ... a mod to show the time or order in which each mod was installed in the package manager  :)

HAHAHAHAHAHA .......... yeah, OK I will uninstall all 43 of my mods just so I can uninstall SP.  :D

I may uninstall by hand (yes I know how) as soon as I get a few hours to spare.

Thanks for the info, I will work on the forum some day and will update my other mods too, even my hand written mods.

My site was recently hacked - virus warning to visitor etc. Either poor mod coding (could also be old version mods) or server problem. Instead of 38 mods I have 20 now that i really need.

And uninstalling 40 mods can be done in 20 minutes - a lot less time than visiting here and commenting.

Also your mods might be getting out of date. I often tell people the best is to start over if fully modded. I use the large upgrade smf files (10 mins to download, upload and run the upgrade). After that I reinstall the mods - first checking for updates. That can be done in 30 minutes to an hour if slow.
I do this at least 3 times a year because of too many mod tests etc and changes to the templates. After a couple of times it is routine and quick.

Either of the 2 ways I just explained is a lot quicker than by hand - consider Oldcrows problem in the thread I posted - bits of other mod changes all mixed up - you might find it impossible by hand with 40 mods.
