Help with site
« on: April 04, 2014, 04:44:55 PM »
Recently me and a few other people have tried to make a site around an smf forum.  We have experienced many problems (we have made several sites in the past, so this is not our first rodeo).

For starters, we tried to install a new theme, but there is no option to install.

Second, we can't update the forum.

I am very confused as our the other people.  Help is needed please.  Here is our site: http://www.smfforums.com/forums/hfl/index.php

If you can help, please tell me what you need for us to do to help you help us.  Thanks.

Hello Falcons and welcome to SimplePortal.

I don't know what the issue is.  I see you have moved to a phpbb forum.  Are you still interested in working with SMF and SimplePortal?

Have you installed other SMF forums?
How many mods do you have installed?
What problem are you having installing new themes?
What problem are you having updating SMF?

Have you had a look at the documentation at  http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Category:BFG for information on installing themes, and doing upgrades and patches, and also for information on common installation problems.

You can also read about installation difficulties in the documentation here:

You will always be limited using free hosted - pre installed forums and then when you move onto free hosting you will find limits too. Save yourself and others the headaches that will eventually come with limits, scratch some coin together and pay for webhosting

Falcon,

It seems you may have moved on, and found another host for your haxfootball site.
I am marking this topic "solved".

If this is wrong, please hit the "topic not solved" button and continue to ask questions.

Thanks, and good luck with your Hax football forum.

I have never used the pre installed free forums before, either

but what I do know is that it really is limited from an administration point of view (which is to be expected) so I was pointing out to the OP that paid hosting is generally the best place to start - specially to learn from as it allows /you do access any file.

added the reply even tho it really has no benefit to the original posters confusion but sometimes people find posts via search, thus question being answered.

There are some places for small forums you cna pay a hosting for as little as 3.99 a months.
Of course you share it with a 1000 people maybe but is better then free ones. I have used free ones about 6 years ago and after two weeks said no way.
If a person only need a small forum and speed and cron jobs are not part of your main requirements Id say get a low cost host that includes SMF in the cpanel, it will do the install for you and so much easier and the cost of a BigMac per month you save yourself any hassle.
PS if you do not have a domain name many generic hosts will include a domain name too at the same place making hosting even easier.

Our sites are to big and needed a server, but we used to be shared hosting long time ago and it was just fine until we out grew it. Thing is as you grow a free forum will be a pain to move and get the database off the server, as some will tell you no.

Thats too bad, I know new software can be daunting when you have never used before.
Well OP if it helps I have been using SMF over 10 years. And just tried Xenforo, and I feel like a kid learning to ride a bike all over.

Part of the fun of building a site is learning what works for you.
I have tried many software including the paid ones like XF.
But SMF is about the best out there, just like SP, there are many portals out there.
But this one was and has always been my favorite. I like things that work and are solid.

Fluff, not so much LOL

Yes it is support for SimplePortal.

The original poster (Falcons) seems to have stopped using SimplePortal, so he may never see your answers to his questions.
(In fact, I think he is now using a different forum software altogether).

I'm sorry -- I didn't mean to say that, at least not exactly.

It is always good to have easy-to-find good answers to common questions on the site.

I do appreciate your efforts to be find correct and useful answers that will help the SimplePortal community.
Since there are only so many hours in the day, I just wanted to point out that this topic seems a little bit on the dead side, and that you will not be able to help the OP, as it looks like he or she is not coming back.

There is some information available about SMF-centric hosts and hosting at http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=4.0

And it would be fine to start a topic about community experience with running SMF and SimplePortal on specific hosts.  Many people might feel free to share their own experience on a topic like that.

Thanks for helping to support the community.
