Portal links not working properly for guests
« on: September 21, 2014, 12:37:46 PM »
Hello everyone,

Simple portal is really a very amazing mod. I have 0 knowledge of php and I never thought I could set up a homepage for my forum so easily. Yet I'm facing a problem, I created 3 blocks (recent post/topics). The links displayed in these blocks work fine when logged in, but as a guess, all the links do not redirect to the topic, but redirect to the forum index.

I had no problem installing the mod.

Another Minor problem is that there is no gap between the left and the middle, and the middle and the right blocks. And this looks a bit ugly. So I need to increase that gap. But this is minor.

If you wanna see the link problem, you may visit www.theultimatestep.net, and the blocks gap problem could be seen in the attachment

Somehow, I only see one side of the blocks, more likely the left, the recent blocks are there.

Seems you have something not configured correctly, which is causing that.
In general block settings, what are the widths set for each side?

Also, the links are not working, due to somehow, they got messed up, as they are trying to duplicate the session ID. I noticed you seem to have some kind of url mod installed. Which one? Try to uninstall that, if can, as they usually are not worth it, and are more problematic, than they are worth.

Links seem to work fine for me, but I see only center block. Left and right sidebar are hidden for me as guest.
As for layout - this should be fixed by theme author.

@BurkeKnight where do you see this URLs? I see only built-in pretty urls

Notice the PHPSESSID is done twice?

You may be right about it being the center blocks...
I had thought they were the left, due to most of them being more styled as side blocks, rather than center. ;)

Here's the list of the mods that are/were installed, Optimus brave and SEO site map seemed suspicious, so I uninstalled them both, but that did not help resolving the link problem.

1.   AvatarSelect   1.2.1
2.   SA Facebook   2.0.4    (uninstalled)
3.   SEO Sitemap   2.2.1    (uninstalled)
4.   Add Facebook Like, Tweet, and Google +1   1.0.3a
5.   Optimus Brave   1.8.7   (uninstalled)
6.   Similar Topics   0.6
7.   SimplePortal   2.3.5
8.   Tagging System   2.4.2
9.   Post_Board_Select   1.3
10.   Custom Board Sort   1.0.2
11.   SimpleAds   1.0.1
12.   ENotify (uninstalled)

And width of the left and the right blocks are 190 each. I've disabled them as they don't look clean.

akshtsaklani7,

Your links seem to be working now therefore I assume you figured out what the issue was?

Underdog, no, they are not all working right.
I still see the ones in the recent having the PHPSESSID 2 times, and when click them, get sent to board index, not the post.

For example:

BurkeKnight,

Yes I had seen what the issue was with the initial (duplicate) session id causing a problem with page rendering.
When I was testing it the other day it suddenly worked properly whereas there were no session id's in the url queries/links.
Perhaps the OP was adjusting or uninstalling something that fixed it at that time but have since put it back to the way it was?

Regards.

Hmm... refresh the url to the OP's forum or open a second page at the same time and attempt to click on the links.
It works when I do that?

Perhaps enable cookies?

3 browsers, all after not opening the site since before doing a full pc reload, and all I get when click the links, is the board index.

And all 3 browsers have cookies enabled.

This is strange indeed....LOL

I restored my forum's backup that had no mod installed. And installed only SP bt the links were still messed up. And once you log in, the links work normal even after logging out. Clear cache n cookies and links again become problematic..

And as a guest, click on the link, you get redirected to board index, omit
Code: [Select]
?PHPSESSID=ac69c2cfbead1d2f0f5371f2521431f5& from the url. After youy do this for once, all links start working fine. But clear cache and cookies, the problem relapses

Have you attempted to alter your server configuration in your SMF admin panel?
There are options to adjust cookie and session behavior.
Admin -> Configuration -> Server Settings -> Cookies and Sessions

Try to adjust some of those settings and then run some tests.
You may have to omit your browser history for proper results.

Regards.

the problem is solved.. I guess it doesn't work with search engine friendly url option enabled.

I just unchecked "search engine friendly URLs" option in Admin -> Configuration -> features and options -> General and it is working fine now.

Thank you for helping.. :)
