Similar to others - Warnings on 2.3.5 Uninstall
« on: November 12, 2014, 11:08:27 PM »
Like a few others, I'm getting 'Test failed' on:

index.php
QueryString.php

Just those two.  Interestingly, I'm also getting a warning at the bottom indicating:

"Some of the files the package manager needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and using it to chmod or create the files and folders"

Not sure if this is causing the test failures indicated above or what.  It's very odd - only this package is giving me the indication that there are unwritable files and my forum has been up and running trouble free for a long time (2007).

SMF 2.0.8 running on a Linode VPS.

No one has answered this so far so here is my 2 cents worth...

If you have ftp problems it is related to your server setup. And if you are on Linode VPS you are the manager of your own server - thats your responsibility to know about these things and the settings.
If you are not good at that you can ask Linode to help (maybe paid support) or better switch to simple webhosting where settings are done for you, and most support is free.

I feel a little sorry for you as Im interested in Linode to run several sites from one VPS but ... you already know who is responsible for fixing the VPS when things dont work as expected or you get hacked and have to work out why.

If you have problems uninstalling and warnings then the code has been changed by other mods - you will find a solution here if you look through my recent posts

Don't feel bad for me - SMF on VPS is known to have issues with 'localserver' FTP.  The only mod that reports an issue with it is SimplePortal.  SMF itself and all the other mods work just fine.  And I've gone through more than one update to SimplePortal - this one seems to have issues.

Not a big deal.  I'm fine with sticking with the current version for a while, and one day when I have time I'll set up a fresh copy of my site and install current versions of the few mods I need.  SP was likely the first one I installed, so it might just be that I need to uninstall the others in the right sequence.  I'll have to keep track of the mod install sequence next time I go about it.

Linode is great - been on Linode VPS for nearly 4 years now.  I outgrew the shared hosting scene years ago.  Even knowing nothing about Linux I was able to set myself up and have been keeping Ubuntu up to date and the site up for the 4 years with minimal support and not paying anybody.  Thankfully there's enough revenue now to cover any paid help I might choose to bring on board.

tim,

Imo due to security updates it would be prudent to update your forum to SMF 2.0.9.
As for your issue regarding installation, perhaps ensure chown and chmod settings (recursive) are appropriate for the specified directory.
You can recursively adjust those settings via your shell (ie. pUTTY terminal).

Regards.

One thing Im a great believer in is SMF large upgrade package. One thing I hate is that SMF is not a plugin system but  patches over basic software code.

Angelina and others have said here that all you need to do is uninstall mods in reverse order until Simple Portal , uninstall the portal, install the new version and then reinstall all mods.

I prefer the large upgrade package... delete everything unnecessary and use the large upgrade package and reinstall mods (latest versions of everything). You can find details in my recent posts as I have said this many times. It does not take long to reinstall a site this way and everything is up to date if you download new mod versions.

Andy,
I would like to add something to your comments for anyone that uses the upgrade package.
Imo the best practice for altering SMF files for something unique to a forum is to modify mod installation files or perhaps for SMF files themselves to create your own personal plugin to do the modifications. This way when one has to use the upgrade package which puts all SMF files to default, one can simply install their plugin to add the unique edits anew. Of course this requires a bit of knowledge regarding PHP syntax but if a site owner can edit unique changes they should be able to figure this out.

Also I am not sure if the latest upgrade package removes hooks (as it should) because previous upgrades did not. In the past one had to use the SMF repair settings tool ( http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Repair_settings.php )  which may still be necessary but I have not checked.

Regards.
