2.3.5 language on 2.3.6 possible?
« on: November 27, 2014, 06:53:51 PM »
First of all, thank you for this nice release, my upgrade went flawlessly without *any* error notice. :applause:

But now to my question. I had SP 2.3.5. running with the 2.3.5 Dutch language pack.
Until now there is no 2.3.6 Dutch language pack yet (let me know if you like me to help translate).

Is it safe to use the 2.3.5 Dutch language pack on 2.3.6 until there is a 2.3.6 version? Or are files changed so much that this could cause problems?
Greetings, Black Tiger

Try it at least? :| Someone is supposed to test things and if they don't work THEN ask for help, not without even trying...
Have you tried SimplePortal Documentation before asking? ;)

You clearly did not think about your answer. :(

Did you even think about the fact that trying could mess up your forums? Would you do that if you had other options like asking?
Did you think about the fact that maybe somebody already tried it?
Didn't you think there might be a possibility that someone knows (developer or something) without trying (and risking problems) because they know the structure of things?
Don't you think forums are for asking just those questions?

I'm sorry but don't you now also think your reply might be a bit stupid if you consider these things?

It's actually my fault for not making it more clear. I had only posted it in the release announcement topic.

For those who might be wondering about the language packages; there were no changes to language strings in 2.3.6 version, so the language packages for 2.3.5 can safely be used for 2.3.6 version as well.

So yes, you can use safely use 2.3.5 language packs with 2.3.6 version. I actually tried really hard not to make changes to language files so that the language packs could still be used with the new version without requiring any changes.
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

I only read the announcement on the main page and the "read more" which pointed to here:
http://simpleportal.net/index.php?topic=13678.0
There was indeed no info present about language packs in that announcement.

I'm glad you clarified it SiNaN, thank you very much! :applause:

You can take me up on my translation offer any time if needed.

You're welcome. Currently our team member responsible for translations is doing the Dutch translation, but if you come across any mistakes, feel free to report them. Thank you for your willingness to contribute though, I appreciate it.

Meh, Black Tiger, I'll just ignore you. Troubles, oh my god, you will have (or would have had) one freaking untranslated string, disaster. Bah... So bad that easy questions like these find the answer and more complicated ones sometimes don't.

Lol SiNaN :P well you definitely do, still I see that the support is a bit absent :( I would love to get Angelina back, here and also on sm.org - she disappeared...

@Black meh, it's extremely rare that I argue with somebody... So I don't mind, I'm usually a bit more kind than necessary, not this time :P

Look Ninja. Maybe you are good in this stuff, I'm not a coder and I'm normally more kind too.

But I don't have a clue how the languages are put in the scripts. I'm no scripting guru.
So it's fairly logical that I ask a question just to be sure, before i f*** things up.

The answer you give is then very user unfriendly, it's just the same like pointing to Google.
A forum is for asking questions, also -before- you f*ck things up. That's what forums are for and believe me, I'm a forum admin of several forums for already 14 years. If not, then you don't need to start a forum.

So if you don't find a question worth while, just leave it be and better don't answer then giving an useless irritating answer, which ofcourse also produced an irritated reply from me. Which I normally don't do either.

If you're on a forum and want to help, keep in mind that nobody needs a forum for the trial and error procedure. It comes in handy for that, but is mostly needed to prevent errors if possible.

I couldn't know that it might only cause a false translation string. If I knew that, I would have installed it but even then I had asked the question with the thought in mind to translate the rest myself.

If you just answered that I only cuold get a false translation string, instead of the irritating answer you gave without thinking, the situation wouldn't have gotten out of hand.;)

Notice ->Edited due to vulgar language.

Nice answer indeed.

The only thing that sounds a bit strange to me is the fact that you didn't know it after 14 years of being a forum admin, otherwise... Nothing to add. Handshake? :)

Well, I'm getting older... And we all miss Angelina and really looking forward to her return. :)
As for the first part... No idea :P
As regards Angelina... Yes, sadly :( I also PMed her a long while ago, I really miss her and I am a bit worried about her. She gave me many useful suggestions in private after I registered to sm.org, suggestions that at first I found irritating but I was thinking that only because she was damn right :P and I ended up thanking her very much :) I am a guy who doesn't forget things easily. And I do miss people who deliberately helped me without even asking...

I used vBulletin for 14 years which at first had file edits but later a much better system with database template hooks. I don't do very much php and translation can be done from within the admincp of vBulletin.
Tonight something went wrong with a mod, I had to put a backup back of a second SMF forum. Great forum soft, but bad mod system compared to vB due to the file edits. For this reason I already was a bit annoyed too.

And this is the 3rd time on an SMF forum something happens with a mod install, so that's why I'm very very carefull with anything I try to install, including this portal, to prevent problems.
I do ofcourse have file and dataabase backups, but it's a lot of extra work to restore if not needed.
So with SMF I rather ask questions then just try things.

I'm sorry. I mean no offense.
No hard feelings! Handshake ofcourse! ;)

Aaaah I totally understand then. So I guess that installing 125 mods on my forum kinda made me think that way ;D general hint: if it says it would install at least on 2.0.2 it *should* install without issues. This is a general hint but after installing so many mods I have seen that 2.0.2 is usually compatible with 2.0.9, even if I have done many manual tweaks to make all of them compatible and I am still fixing some undefined errors occasionally.
Glad we sorted it anyway, sorry if I sounded a bit rude :)

I don't know why, but I'm just running into the ones which do make some issue. Sometimes I can fix them, except for when I get a white screen.:)
This evening it was my co admin. Cancelled the installation after seeing an error (good job) but it was too late.:)
We almost don't need any mods, SMF has so many nice options.

No harm done. I'm already forgotten the issue we had. I'm glad we sorted it too. ;)
