Reformat articles into columns
« on: January 26, 2015, 08:01:28 PM »
The articles as they appear on the front page portal simply stack.

What I would like is the first (top-most recent) article be full sized, and the following articles be in 2 columns, as seen in the attached example.

Thanks!

It's not an easy task, unfortunately :/ I'd do it if I knew how.
Have you tried SimplePortal Documentation before asking? ;)

Hi Ninja ZX-10RR,

Thanks for replying all the same.

As far as for how to do it, maybe this would help:

SiNaN did a similar thing with the forum news posts here. It may be close enough of a similar project that SiNaN's work may just need a minor tweak to make it work for the articles.

 :D

Thank you!

Nice catch indeed, nice to see when people actually search stuff :)
I have an idea on how it could be done starting from that code, however I'm not enough skilled to do it :( I'd love to do it via .css (not to be superb but I started to know it a little bit after hundreds of hours spent on it for my forum) but it's not doable that way since all news have the same id :/
I hope Chen Zhen will see this one, he will probably be able to code it if he has some time.

Howdy all,

I've been playing with my question... how to divide simpleportal articles into two columns after the first article.

I can approximate this idea by using forum news instead of articles... as SiNaN provided in this post here.

I did this, and it works. But it's not what I need.

The difference between articles and forum news is significant, unfortunately. Clearly even SimplePortal recognizes the difference is significant, or the two entities would not exist as two separate entities.
1. Admin can select what constitutes an article. Forum News merely picks from recent posts.
2. Admin can pick articles from any forum. Forum News must use predefined specific forums.
3. Articles has an infinite number of pages users can use to explore the history of the articles. Forum News is limited to the specified number of posts to show.

I was hoping the PortalArticles.php was similar enough to the PortalBlocks.php so that I could use SiNaN's work on Forum News block as a template for changes to the Articles script, but alas... they are too different for me to figure this out. For example, there aren't even any echo calls in PortalArticles.php, and the entire modification is based on altering the echo in PortalBlocks.php.

The tweak to make forum news two columns was relatively simple... I am hopeful and optimistic someone is willing to help me get the same result in the Articles script.
