Blocks suddenly moved after server update
« on: April 28, 2016, 09:42:00 AM »
Hello.

I had a nice forum where everything was lined perfectly.
Now today we had to upgrade php 5.5.29 to 5.5.34 and in Cpanel a symlinks patch was done.

After that my forums did not line up anymore.
The first image is the top of the main forum page, where my right side blocks were residing (in the white space) and were lined with the rest.
The second image is about half way the forum page where blocks start, which they shouldn't.

Also on the portal page the right and left column are now suddenly halway the portal page.
I did not change anything on the forum setup.

Any clue on how to fix this?
Greetings, Black Tiger

Black Tiger,

re. satellitefun.org

  To begin with there are many HTML errs on the page.
First fix the HTML so it is compliant, failing that we can start by eliminating other possibilities.
ie. the TapTalk style tag should be within the head of the document whereas it is in the body.
... there are many other issues there such as messed up divs

Ehi Black Tiger, how you doing? :)

As Chen Zhen rightfully pointed out your forum is full of html errors all over the place, you can take a peek here: https://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.satellitefun.org%2Fforum%2Findex.php&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0 although some of those are actually valid, most of them are real errors.
Not sure what you've done there but you definitely did something very wrong somewhere.
Have you tried SimplePortal Documentation before asking? ;)

Aside from the HTML issues, the portal's css & js files are not in the default theme's directory.
Did you recently add that theme and/or omit your default theme files?
Even if you do not want to use the default theme, you should never remove it.

Put the default theme back and include Simple Portal's necessary files that belong in its folders.
The css file can go into that custom theme css folder but the js file is supposed to be in the default theme's scripts folder.

Hello Chen Zhen and Ninja.

Firstly thanks for your reply.
I don't understand the html errors. I did not do anything manually. If there is anything wrong, it can only be things I put into blocks like the radio, adsense, well... the blocks you see on the right side.

Sorry, I don't know where you got that impression, but I never delete default things unless explicitely stated. And the portal files -are- present in the default theme's directory!
I did not recently add or omitted things. The only change made was when 2.3.6 was reseased I upgraded my 2.3.5 to 2.3.6 but that was last year already.

As said I'm using it this way for several years, even w3c check did not give all those errors and suddenly things went wrong yesterday.
Things happening yesterday was a php upgrade as stated, the other thing was a recompile of apache to implement the followsymlinks hack protection.
That was all. And after that, suddenly my forum looked this way.

I'll try to disable blocks one by one, searching where the problems are and reinstall the portal.

After removing portal, there are a lot of errors still turning up. I'm going to investigate how to fix it.
Firstly remove all addons and look if I can get things better again.

I'll keep you informed!

I've overwritten all SMF 2.0.11 files and the many errors were gone. After that I reinstalled SimplePortal.

At the moment there are only some errors from 2 of my blocks which I don't understand. It says something about having to be "transitional" but my headers says "transitional" so I'm confused. I'm no html guru.

However, blocks are still halfway the page and not on top of the page.

Also if I switch to the default core them of SMF, it's the same problem.
Maybe you can help me fix this now?

I really have no idea, but sorry if it wasn't you somebody screwed something up.

So Chen Zhen is totally right about missing files, the alignment problem is the smallest thing you should be worrying about. However, you could try to run repair settings, maybe the host changed some paths without telling you... (http://download.simplemachines.org/index.php?thanks;filename=repair_settings.php).

So Chen Zhen is totally right about missing files
No he is not! But it looks that way. ;)
As said, they are there, I know where to look for things if they could be missing, as stated, the problem occured after doing the "followsymlinks" security patch on Cpanel.
I wouldn't say they are present when I didn't do a doublecheck.

But I discovered the issue by accident.
If you try to call those files directly, you will get a 404 error saying that it does not exist, while it does exist.

Checking the file owner, several files (not all) are owned by "nobody" the apache user, because they were installed via the browser (via the admin panel), although it is set to publicly readable. So that's odd.
Now if I change the owner to my accountname, then it will work.

Just to test it out, I set the portal.js to my accountname as owner and see..... it works.

So the files are present, but it -is- the symlink fix which is causing the trouble some how. I'll guess I have to contact Cpanel for this.

Ehmmz.....

So the .css is still owned by nobody at this moment, as are several other files, like they always were, and so not external accessible at the moment (which they should be), and faulty generating a 404.

Files are present but it's a server-side issue with the patch I mentioned. Since I'm also a server admin, I'll fix the symlink issue another way and already have contacted Cpanel about the issue.

However if you have some tips on how I can fix the errors in the blocks, which is html as I learned it (too many years ago lol), then I would be very happy, html is not my thing.
This is the content of that block:

Code: [Select]
<div style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://download.emsisoft.com/EmsisoftAntiMalwareSetup_10626661" target="_blank"><img src="../../images/emsi_shield.png" width="80" height="80" border="0" align="middle" alt="Emsisoft" /><br /><br />
<FONT face="Verdana, Arial, Courier" size="1,5"><b>De beste antivirus- en<br />
malware bescherming verkrijgbaar!</b></font></a></div>

I've no clue on what's wrong with this.

The js file seems to be available now but the css file is not.

BTW you should not be installing/uninstalling mods showing errors unless you know how to parse those errors or that you can ignore certain errors due to circumstance (ie. deleted themes or already manually parsed).
If you really mess things up you can always use the SMF large upgrade package (make sure it is upgrade pkg), ensure to use the uninstall all hooks option then install all mods anew.

Thank you.
The css is not showing because the problem is not solved on server-side yet and I did not chown it to my account ownership yet.

I also never install or uninstall mods which are showing errors. The uninstalls which I did today did not show any error. Except one, which for that reason I did not uninstall.

What you suggest is largely what I in fact did. Uninstall all mods which give no errors on uninstalling.
After that I have overwritten all files with files from the large upgrade package, which removed the errors. And now I installed 2 mods and Simpleportal again.

As you can see all is working fine again now after I fixed the symlink patch server-side.
Thank you both for helping me and thinking with me.

Any idea's on the w3 errors on the block I made?

for what you previously posted:

Code: [Select]
<div style="text-align: center;vertical-align: middle;">
<a href="http://download.emsisoft.com/EmsisoftAntiMalwareSetup_10626661" target="_blank">
<img src="../../images/emsi_shield.png" style="width: 80px; height: 80px;border: 0px;" alt="Emsisoft" /><br /><br />
<span style="font: 10px Verdana, Arial, Courier; font-weight: bold;">De beste antivirus- en<br />malware bescherming verkrijgbaar!</span>
</a>
</div>

If the vertical-align of the parent container is not satisfactory then look at this link to use trial & error:

For your user info block, open it up in block settings and enter the following in the two fields shown below (inputs at bottom of block settings)...

custom body class:
centertext

custom body style:
overflow: hidden;

It got rid of the scroll bar that was showing but the input boxes are still a bit cut off.
The easiest solution to fix that is to make the text within the block to x-small.

custom body style:
overflow: hidden; font-size: x-small;

Oh I did not see any scroll bar on my Firefox, but maybe that's the resolution I'm working in (1440x900)
I don't see a cut-off either.

I tried your code, but if I do that, the font is smaller then the birtday box below it and it's a bit too small for my old eyes.;)

Is there also a code which is a little bigger then x-small? I tried small but then it's even bigger then I leave out the font code completely.
