Indeed, I have moved this to the bugs board.

This seems to be intentional, that guests cannot post shouts, but the permissions options for the shoutbox don't seem to be clear enough, ie. they let you select guests.

I will post a solution for you later.

Permissions for shoutboxes are view permission, not shout permission.

Anyone who can see the shoutbox and is identified by forum will be able to shout.

If it is a guest, which means he even doesn't have a username, why would you let him shout?
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...

Well, if the shoutbox permissions do effectively the same thing as the block permissions that you can setup for each block that shows a shoutbox (they both restrict who can view the shoutbox), then having permissions for the shoutbox itself is pointless.

It makes more sense to have the shoutbox permissions change who can make a shout. While having guests make shouts is fairly pointless, there are uses for having shout/view permissions separate, eg. If you only want membergroups with more than 10 posts or something to be able to make shouts, while everyone can see the shoutbox.

That be what I thought was unclear. ;)

very clear, thanks!

just for the record, i use the shoutbox more as a chat.
and nevertheless, i'm a big believer in engaging guests so they'll become members, and so far it's working very nicely.

Blocks and shoutboxes are not bound to each other, like you can use shoutbox without having a block for it. Making them dependent on blocks is limiting and making things harder coding wise.

I can't see why you would want someone to see the shoutbox but not be able to shout, except for guests. But that's just how I see it.

Guests making shouts is actually pretty important to my setup (the culture around RP forums is such that non-members expect to be able to engage the site before joining), so chalk me up as another who would like permissions to be extended to who can make shouts, not just view the box.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to voice my opinion..

But I would very much like to have the ability to permission guests to post to the shoutbox as well.

My forum and I have fallen in love with this tool and unfortunately are going to have to look for a new one that allows for guest posting. Would love to be able to come back to this when you enable guest shouting!
