Some web hosts do not allow chmod 777.
So -- you set it to 777, but still have problems.
If you have access to server errors for your account, you should check there for more information.

You can try chmod to 755. Or 655. or even 645.
You may have to make several tries before you learn what is going to work for you.
Here is an example of another post where this problem came up: http://simpleportal.net/index.php?topic=6291.msg36643#msg36643

Of course, in that case, the problem cropped up AFTER the install.

Have you tried the SimplePortal documentation?

No messages in my mail box about any errors, I know the host I'm using allows 777 chmods because I had Simple Portal working on my old forums. I'm starting to think that it may have something to do the fact that I have RC3 forums and SP 2.3.3 when maybe I should be using RC4 with SP 2.3.3.  :dead:

*SOMETHING* should happen during install.  It seems as though nothing happened.

What happens if you attempt index.php?action=admin;area=portalconfig

Is there anything there?

Assuming you're using a shared hosting package:

Ask your host to chown your directory to your user, some hosts do not distinguish between your user and the apache account (nobody, user99, etc) and that makes files look like they're writable but aren't really.

This has happened to me before, though I was own a VPS (not shared hosting) and I had to use command line and chown the directory myself.

I honestly don't think this has anything to do with my host, but like what Angelina said is on to something, there is no simple portal tab there yet it says it's installed.

A question, can you install other mods via the SMF package manager?

If none of the SimplePortal edits have been made (including the button edit) and none of the SP files have been installed by the SMF package manager, then this is a problem with the package manager. The most common issue with the package manager and installing mods, is that the file permissions are incorrect, which is often an issue with server configuration, so in fact, this issue is quite likely related to your host.

If you can't install any mods then there are two options:
1) Contact your host and ask them to make your SMF directory writeable so that the package manager works.
2) Install all of your mods manually, you can find manual installation instructions for mods (including SimplePortal) on the SMF mod site.

I would recommend contacting your host, as that is by far the better, easier, quicker and safer option.

The Package Manager is not perfect (not by a long shot) and is reporting a false positive. This has been made clear when the index.php file you attached had no SimplePortal edits.

Following Nathaniel's advice is the best solution in this case.

Thanks for bringing up this point. It was neglected in the "Install Problems" documentation, and now is addressed, in a rather vague way, because I think there are a few "wrong owner" possibilities, depending on server settings. And since I haven't been through all the possible combinations, I wouldn't want to try listing them...
