Docs / News Section
« on: January 28, 2011, 07:53:47 AM »
Just a quick question..

im trying to use SP to create a simple website that works with the forum data.

I have my portal news from a set forum and displays on the home page..

is there a way i can have a link in the main nav bar that displayes the news posts only.. as it would in the block... without actually going to the forums... something like a blog perhaps..

also the SP docs section.. is this created using SP tools or is it a seperate mod?? as i would like to do something similar..

Many thanks.. Great portal btw. saved me trying to teach a non techy to use joomla.. and just do it all with SMF :D

I am not sure what you mean by:
a link in the main nav bar that displayes the news posts only.. as it would in the block... without actually going to the forums... something like a blog perhaps

I'm guessing you don't actually want to display the posts in the main nav bar.

I'm guessing you want
1) A SimplePortal page that displays a forum news block containing your blog postings
2) A link to the blog page from your main nav bar.

For 1), just create a new page, and a board news block that ONLY shows itself on that single page.
For 2), you probably want to search the mods site for "buttons" or "nav bar".  There are a couple of mods that help you to add new buttons, including one developed by a SimplePortal user (johncccccc, though he is now spelling it upside-down at simplemachines.org)

SimplePortal docs is a special-purpose customization, and has not been released as a mod. It relies on some fairly standard SMF stuff, with a bit of specialty code to keep track of which topics belong to which part of the documentation. I haven't actually seen any of the code, so I can't tell you any more about it.

Have you tried the SimplePortal documentation?

Cheers for the prompt reply..

sorry for the confusion. trying to explain something without making sence.

on the main portal page you have a news feed block in the top section... that pulls its feeds from the chosen forum in the settings...

what i want is to add a nav button (i know how to do this) that just gives me that news block and nothing else.. basically a list of all the news items...

as for the doc section.. thanks for the info.. i guessed it would be a closed source project for SP.. :)

If you want to see a list of just the Subjects of the recent topics from a board, you could use the RECENT TOPICS block, and limit it to just the board you are interested in.
