xml error in RSS Feed Block
« on: July 05, 2011, 06:41:30 AM »
Morn All,

I know that there are some issues with the RSS Feed block being a little bit flakey, but thought I would post this anyway in hopes that someone will be able to help me (Hint Hint SiNaN).  There are 4 feeds and this is the only one that I am having problems with.

I am getting an "invalid character on line 8".  I have viewed the source and even though they are using UTF-8 encoding I noticed that there is a copyright character (the one with the circle and a "c" in the middle).  I did some reading and have found that there could be issues with it.  I tried the fix that SiNaN adviced in http://simpleportal.net/index.php?topic=9072.0 but gave me an invalid feed error.

The feed is http://www.nfl.com/rss/rsslanding?searchString=home

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Morn All,

Sorry to bump this but really need to get it fixed.  I did play around with it some more and it appears that out of the 4 feeds I use this ones schema seems to indicate that it is an "atom" feed instead of an "rss".  Does anyone know if that is going to make a difference ?

Something about the functions SimplePortal calls in the RSS feed block just doesn't work some times. The SMF functions it calls LOOK LIKE they ought to do the job, but they were not specifically designed to provide RSS feeds, and I don't understand the problem.
In the topic you reference, I see that Sinan has done some testing. He has figured out that the RSS block is more likely to work well if your forum uses the UTF-8 character encoding.
If the quick fix he gave does not work for you, it could be complicated to fix it. Sinan recognizes that RSS block will not be reliable until the code has been completely re-written.
Please to keep this website running, if you like SimplePortal, make a

Have you tried the SimplePortal documentation?

Thanx Angelina appreciate the response.

For one to try to get everything to work with everything is setting oneself up for failure.  Everyone has done a great job on SP and all the responsability shouldn't lay on those alone to solve the problems.  If everyone sticks together and shares their experience then we might just succeed in having everything work with everything which isn't a failure.

I am going to mark this one "solved" just to get it off the "support radar". This is tracked as a known problem with SimplePortal.
