Pages already have permissions, which are a much stronger type of security than password protection. With password protection, it's almost impossible to tell when a leak has occurred, but with permissions you can be assured that only the membergroups you have chosen can access the page. Plus, then users only have to remember one password: their own.

Instead of questioning the use of passwords, why not actually give instructions to make it so. For all we know, he could be making a secret page or facilitating a game where passwords are required to access various things.
