Title: Best way to install/upgrade
Post by: Talismen on June 15, 2009, 01:18:49 PM
I know this question has probably been asked a zillion times before, but....

When a fresh version of SP is released, what is the majority opinion on the best way to install? I'm speaking specifically to full fresh versions of SP, and not "patches".

I've never had consistant success with any other option, other than uninstalling the previous version, installing the new version, then completely deleting that previous version once the new one is in place.

I've tried the "http://www.yourdomain.tld/forum/upgrade.php", but it never seems to work properly. Should I be able to upgrade SP (as with SMF) using that method? Is there always an "upgrade.php" within every version of SP, so that this would work?

Thanks for your time!

No, SimplePortal does not include an 'upgrade.php' file between major versions.

As you are aware, between minor versions like 2.2.1 to 2.2.2 you can normally just upload the new package and it will perform the minor changes.

Between major versions such as 2.1.x and 2.2.x, you will have to uninstall SimplePortal and then install the latest version. That is the only option. While SimplePortal doesn't have a 'upgrade.php' file, the 'install.php' file included within the SimplePortal package (which is run when you install) can install new SimplePortal data or upgrade your data from any previous 2.x.x version of SimplePortal. It detects the version of SP that you have so that you have to do as little work as possible.

You can run the 'install.php' file from 'http://www.yourdomain.tld/forum/install.php' if you extract it from the SP package and upload it to your site (to upgrade your data only). However that shouldn't be necessary as the package manager runs it on install.
