Title: Re: Empty Package??

I have the same problem and did what you suggested in your message.  I do not see a 2.3.1 installation package that is being referred to.  I have some tar.gz file that doesn't do anything for me.  This was installed as a package into my SMF as a ZIP.  How do you upgrade it from 2.3?  I'm not seeing it.

I have split this topic from the other one, as your issue is different.

You need to download SimplePortal before you can install it, you can download it from our Downloads area (http://simpleportal.net/index.php?action=downloads;area=cat1).

With all due respect, I already downloaded what your server is giving me to download?  The "package" is called SimplePortal_2.3.1.tar.gz.  I've never worked with a tar.gz file before.  SimplePortal 2.3 was installed from a ZIP file.  When I attempt to install this tar.gz file, I get:

An Error Has Occurred!
Package upload failed due to the following error:
"Although the package was downloaded to the server it appears to be empty. Please check the Packages directory, and the "temp" sub-directory are both writable. If you continue to experience this problem you should try extracting the package on your PC and uploading the extracted files into a subdirectory in your Packages directory and try again. For example, if the package was called shout.tar.gz you should:
1) Download the package to your local PC and extract it into files.
2) Using an FTP client create a new directory in your "Packages" folder, in this example you may call it "shout".
3) Upload all the files from the extracted package to this directory.
4) Go back to the package manager browse page and the package will be automatically found by SMF."

The directories are writable.  This is the only file that I am able to download and SMF is telling me that there is nothing in it.  So where is the upgrade file or the "installation package"?  I am already running 2.3 just fine.  Thank you.

Apologies, your first post was unclear, when you said "I do not see a 2.3.1 installation package that is being referred to." I figured that you had not downloaded the package itself. That is the correct installation/upgrade package.

.zip and .tar.gz files are both archives types, its just that .tar.gz uses better compression than .zip (smaller file size, less bandwidth, etc).

Have you tried uncompressing the SimplePortal_2.3.1.tar.gz file, and then uploading its contents via FTP as suggested by the error message? I personally use Izarc (http://www.izarc.org/) for .tar.gz files.

I have been unable to work on the upgrade.  I'll try as you suggested in a few hours.  Thank you for the guidance and I will report the outcome then.

My apologies as I know little about all of this tar.gz stuff.  I downloaded IZarc and extracted a tar file.  I uploaded that and SMF didn't recognize it as an installable file.  I opened the tar file and it had a single 1 meg file in it that I also uploaded and no change.  I'm just not sure what I'm looking for.  I downloaded the tar.gz file from this site again to be sure that I had a good file.

I'm not opposed to learning something new, but the ZIP format really is easier than this.   :(

Well, the .tar file is an archive, the .gz part just means that it has been compressed, so .tar.gz is a compress archive. Izarc should be able to extract the files straight from a .tar.gz file, although it might ask you if you want to extract the .tar archive or not.

I have the added complication that I've just upgraded to Windows 7 and I think IZarc didn't like that.  A fellow Admin sent me a ZIP with all of the files in it and that did not work either.  I FTP'ed the files to the server and had scripting errors during install.  I'm really no further along and it appears that I am destined not to get this install done, for whatever reasons.

I walked away from it last night and will attempt another try later in my day. I'll report all of the scripting errors as I get them.  Thanks for the patience.

Any updates on this issue booch_21? Did you manage to get your SMF package manager to recognize and install the SimplePortal package?

Sorry for the LONG delay on this.  I finally upgraded to RC2 and was able to install this latest version.  All is fine now.  Thank you for your time on this.
