Just installed a fresh version of smf 2.02. Uploaded Simple Portal 2.3.4 through package manager which installed fine with no errors.
But there is no sign of Simple Portal, checked all the admin/control panel settings and there is no reference to Simple Portal.
Any ideas please?

jazzyman,
This sounds like the Package Manager got confused. It thinks it was successful, but clearly, it did not succeed.
This behavior is often related to a permission problem.
Who is your host? What rules does your host have for file and directory permissions?
Have you read through the suggestions at http://simpleportal.net/index.php?action=docs;area=solving_install_problems
Please try the suggestion about the temp folder first -- that is the easiest, and often fixes the problem.
The second easiest is setting all file and folder permissions as permissive AS YOUR HOST ALLOWS but not any more permissive.

Host is lvcs who use a plesk system. I have ftp access and can change permissions to 777 if required. I did create a temp folder with 777 permission and there was no problems or errors when I installed Simple Portal. There is just no sign of the portal?
If I carried out a manual install, would you think that this will solve the problem?

You do not want to do a manual install of such a large mod. That would be painful!
Try folders with 755 permission, files with 655 or 645 permission, and give it another try.
