Title: [Plugin] SP Shoutbox Audio
Post by: Chen Zhen on November 26, 2011, 10:14:33 AM
SP-Shoutbox Audio - Simple Portal Plug-in
Version 2.1

This modification will function with Simple Portal 2.3.7
It will allow your Simple Portal Shoutbox to use an audio alert for new shouts.
Attention!! : It is advised to set each Shoutbox refresh rate setting to 5 seconds or greater for this plug-in to perform properly.

Please Note:
This modification will add extra settings to the Simple Portal Shoutbox Admin Page.
Admin -> Simple Portal -> Shoutbox -> Shoutbox Audio
Deleting Mp3 files, opting a Mp3 file, uploading mp3 files (max 40KB each file), enable/disable this plug-in,  and a refresh rate setting will be available

This Simple Portal plug-in c/o Chen Zhen

Version History:
----------------

v2.1
- removed unnecessary utf-8 language file (standard language file is already utf-8)
- now using ion.sound javascript library for browser behavior/compatibility (requires no dependencies)
! shout alert no longer executed when creating own shout
! alert interval omitted (no longer necessary)
! fixed shoutbox audio admin template to be w3c compliant (...less the empty spans)
+ added admin scrollbar with advisory
+ added auto setting for refresh rate of all shoutboxes (defaults them to 10 seconds)

v2.0
- SMF 1.1.X branch support dropped
- flash support dropped
+ strictly HTML5 sound file support (restricted to 40KB mp3 files due to multiple browser compatibility)
+ option to upload mp3 files
+ option to delete mp3 files (except default.mp3)
! admin settings available in a different SP admin template
! HTML no longer added to the database
! admin language file changes
! plug-in name changed from SP-Shout Sounds to SP-Shoutbox Audio

v 1.1
+ Added time interval for when last sound effect will cease

v 1.0

+ Added HTML & Javascript code to new shouts when enabled
+ Added mysql to remove sound code from most previous shout
+ Added Admin options (Enable/Disable and Desired Sound Effect)

For this feature to function you must adjust/set some settings from your Simple Portal admin menu.

Nice mod :)

Thanks.

Please note that after adjusting the effect#, one must create a new shout & then clear their browser cache to hear the change.

Clear your shout history & try it again.
Are you absolutely positive that it installed cleanly without flagging installation errors?

EDIT:

Maybe is necessary to make this:

*Empty the file cache from forum

You should really look into updating your forum to SMF 2.0.2
ref. http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Upgrading#Download_the_Upgrade_Archive
.. and also your Simple Portal to version 2.3.4

Anyhow, you can get outdated versions of my plugins from this page: http://askusaquestion.net/index.php/board,61.0.html
They are for SP 2.3.3

how can we create a "shout_sounds.swf" folder to make our own sound? :D these sounds are not bad but i really wondered how did u make this swf folder because im hearing different sounds not only "ding" sound, sometimes it is changing and im hearing "dong"

I like it but a suggestion ...

Every time a page with the shoutbox on it is loaded there is a sound, whether there is a new comment or not - a bit annoying. Not sure if this would present a lot of work for you or not, or if you want to change it anyway.

My idea would be that it only makes a sound if there is new comment.

PS
Also needed the cache and previous comments deleting to get it to work, though not a big deal.

The file is in Adobe Flash v9 format, where you will need an appropriate editor to replace the mp3 files contained within.

I'm using Flash Pro CS5.

I can't access anything in the shout_sounds.swf file.

Is there another way to replace/edit the shout_sounds.swf file?

I suppose I could create a new swf if I knew the parameters? (I'm not a Flash developer)

Thanx!

If you want to edit the swf file directly I believe you could attempt using the latest version of SWF-Quicker.
Using CS5 you need to first use something like SWF-Decompiler to convert to fla (export to fla) then you can edit with CS5 before compiling back to swf.

This is disappointing... that I would have to use 3rd Party commercial software just to edit the sounds.  :(
Also SWF-Quicker is PC only.  :(

The demo of SWF-Decompiler does not allow me to export the whole file to .fla.

The previous method of adding SP shoutbox alert sounds simply used an .mp3 file on the server (and used a soundmanager.js function):
http://simpleportal.net/index.php?topic=3817.0
This worked perfectly on SMF 1.16/SP 2.3.1
It would have been nice to have this method updated for use with Soundmanager2, and SP 2.3.5

Thorworx,

You can ask the author (Nathaniel) of that edit for an update as he is still occasionally active on this forum.

As for this particular plugin I opted to use a flash file triggered by html object tags.  Imo the 10 alert sounds are more than adequate & anyone wanting to change those sounds will have to figure out how to edit swf flash files.  There are tutorials and tips on the net for accomplishing this & anyone can find those by using a search engine such as Google.  Questions regarding editing those files including detailed instruction will best come from a flash orientated site (ie. Adobe forum) where their staff may point you to some appropriate software/freeware.

Another option is to make your own swf file and edit this mods object & js parameters to trigger your own sounds. Again, flash support for this procedure would best come from a flash orientated forum.

Just installed this mod and it's working well.

One thing I'm curious about, it seems to alert even when there is no new shout, has anyone found a way to fix this so that it only alerts when a new shout has occurred?

Ozzy Mozzy,

Set the time interval to roughly 2 or 3 seconds. This way it will only sound an alert if the last shout was within that interval else it will not make any sound.

Got it thanks....

Ok one more thing i noticed, it beeps everytime the page loads so if i click on a thread it beeps once that page is loaded. is this right? I thought it would only beep if a shout was made within the time i set it too.

Post by: Chen Zhen on September 19, 2012, 05:45:15 AM

Ozzy Mozzy,

It should not produce any sound after the set time interval. However it may behave like this if you have altered the sound #. To fix that all you need to do is clear the shoutbox history & then it should function as you wish.

empire,

Are you testing this on mobile/tablet or tower/laptop?
If on a tower/laptop, do you have adobe flash installed?

The mod needs an overhaul mostly due to the fact that it uses flash to produce the sound whereas it should be ie. mp3 files.
Plus I do not like the way I have it add code to the database within a shout to produce the sound which needs to be changed.
I'll look into it when time permits but atm I am preoccupied with other unrelated tasks at home.

Regards.

I'm currently moved away from that as the upgrade to the new SMF, with unlimited errors that I'm dealing with.

I only tested on the desktop computer. All my computers has adobe flash player installed. If it was with the adobe flash player I wouldn't even post about it, as it was the first thing that I tested

When you are rewriting it could you add a mute button by any chance? Some users may dislike the sound and find it annoying whereas others would leave it on. (If/when you have time, of course).

Both are good ideas.
Although if I add the mute button it might just be for the session.
