Is there a block or code around that would mimic the GROUP MEMBERSHIP screen from inside a users profile? In my latest project I'd like to promote the idea of requesting membership for membergroups...

None at this time. There are plenty of checks involved and it'd take some time to code such a block code. If you are up for a challenge, the groupMembership() function in Profile-Modify.php file is where the original is.
