These scrollbars come courtesy of stlye.css, which comes with your theme.
They sometimes appear, for no apparant reason, when viewing forum posts.
This behavior can depend on the browser you use for viewing.
For instance -- they appear in IE8 but not in IE7 (or IE8 in compatability mode).

You can trace styles using firebug for firefox, or IE's developer's tools. This will tell you what is going on.
In this case, I see that overflow:auto; is used in .post in style.css. Choosing a different option for overflow will change the behavior (please see your favorite CSS tutorial site for more information on CSS overflow values).

It is unclear to me why overflow is triggered in IE8 but not in IE7.

You are probably also seeing this issue when viewing posts on the forum.
Others have complained about this, also.
Please bring it up at the SMF forums, so the team can continue to improve the CURVE theme.

Thanks!

Ugly scrollbars appear sometimes, when the forum is viewed in IE8.

This is a result of how IE8 renders the CSS that comes with the curve-type theme.
