Title: can SP and SMF be installed into an existing website?
Post by: bordercollie on February 21, 2012, 01:59:26 PM
I have a terrific website and I would like to install Simple Portal and SMF INTO this website. I must be possible but how would I install it all?

I was thinking of having a page (or link?) in the header menu that said, "Forums" and clicking this goes to Simple Portal and SMF.

Thanks,
Steve

Create a sub-folder on your existing forum
ie. forum

Download the SMF 2.0.2 full install package from simplemachines.org & decompress (unzip) its contents into the directory you created.
Then access that directory with your browser.

The installer start up will commence where you will need to enter your ftp info to continue.
Make sure the database name & table prefix are unique (different from your existing forum).
The script will guide you through the steps to install the software.
After SMF is installed you can use its package manager to install Simple Portal which you can download from this site.

If the installer can not create the database you may have to use your cpanel (or webmin, etc.) to create a new unique database & then enter the appropriate data during SMF installation.

Notes:

- use an underscore at the end of your opted table prefix
- choose a suitable forum name
