Title: SimplePortal 2.3.4 > blank page after install
Post by: Sneaky on March 22, 2012, 12:17:26 PM
Hi,

I downloaded SimplePortal 2.3.4 yesterday and successfully uploaded the package to my SMF. But when I try to install SP my whole website turns blank.
I then googled and found a way to manually install SP by copying/moving all the files in the correct directories, but it was very buggy, first icons and images didn't show up (which I fixed, icons/images weren't in the right directory) and then later when trying to add blocks, move blocks or something else it would take me to the front page everytime when I clicked on it - so I ended up removing it.

I'm guessing the installation doesn't work properly cause of some permission issue but I'm not sure what do do, I've already added a "temp" folder in the "Packages" folder and chmod-ed it to 777 but I get the same blank page after installing. I'm hoping the blank page is some well known issue and can be resolved!

Sneaky,

Something did not go correctly.
For such a big install as Simple Portal, I would not recommend manual installation.
I do not know what caused the blank page.
But I would like to see.
I have seen a blank page before once, and the problem was fixed very easily ....

Can you install on a "test" forum, and let us see the problem?

Well, there is not much to show really. It's just a completely blank page, and the title is the name of my website domain (not which is set in SMF). There are no errors or warnings or anything at all which could indicate what the problem is.

I was wondering exactly where the HTML got cut off. So I wanted to be able to view the HTML source.

Okay I've set up a test forum http://test.soundofviolence.eu/

When trying to upload the SP package it says "An error has occured!" with no further information.

Error log in SMF says this:

Code: [Select]
Apply Filter: Only show the error messages of this URL
http://test.soundofviolence.eu/index.php?action=admin;area=packages;get;sa=upload
Apply Filter: Only show the errors with the same message
8: Undefined index: package_upload_error_failure
Apply Filter: Only show the errors from this file
File: /var/www/vhosts/sov/soundofviolence.eu/httpdocs/subdomains/test/Sources/Errors.php
Line: 187

 :dead:

Edit: uploaded it manually into the Packages directory, and it said the installation was successful - but simpleportal does not appear to be installed, I don't see anything related to simpleportal.

This has got to be some sort of permissions problem, which files and directories do I need to chmod to make this work?

There was a similar case recently:

Maybe this will help:

well I managed to break the site again.. http://soundofviolence.eu/ - it's a blank page now, it said it was successful installed and after redirecting the page went blank, how do I fix this? :O

Edit: I am suspecting it has something to do with the database, I re-installed SMF on my website and used the old database (which had SP installed) to bring back all members, topics etc - I guess something in that broke it.

If the old database is still usable you can try the reset/repair script for smf. Sometimes because the settings are different and the themes, you might get blank pages. Though usually you see an error at the top.

Its worth trying - ftp the php script into your forum folder and run it from your browser (url to it with its name) - you can adjust the settings and see if it makes it useable again. Once its up and working you can fixe the minor things after login.

http://download.simplemachines.org/?tools
In there you will the file 'repair settings'.

Sneaky,

Both http://soundofviolence.eu/ (http://soundofviolence.eu/)  and  http//test.soundofviolence.eu/ look fine to me.
Simple Portal is clearly installed in both places.
Did you find the solution to your problem?

Well the page went blank, I then copied the files from simpleportal into my themes directory and it was fixed, for some reason no files were created for my theme.

I'm glad to hear it.
This sounds like either
1) You did not check the box for Package Manager to do the work in every theme or
2) There was a permission problem in the theme folder, preventing Package Manager from copying the files, even though the permissions LOOK OK -- this behavior can depend on how your host has set things up.
