Title: How to avoid having too many queries with a Portal?
Post by: danpotter on January 07, 2011, 09:08:07 AM
well,in my smf 1.1.12,i installed tiny portal..but unfortunately my host banned my account, when i asked for the reason,he simply said that my forum is using more quires, then i removed the tiny portal, then host provider said that now there is no problem with forum...

i understood that tiny portal is taking more quires..

but after few days,i found this simple portal...now i have some questions regarding this simple portal...

1)Will this simple portal also takes more quiries like tiny portal???

2) if it takes that much quiries,is there any way to reduce the quires??

please answer my questions as quick as possible,so that i can install Simple Portal in my forum smf 1.1.12....

It might be useful for you to find out WHICH queries get run the most.

SimplePortal and TinyPortal are similar in some ways.
The more blocks you put on your pages, the more queries you'll have to run every time someone loads a page.
Some blocks require more queries than others.

And then, there is the shoutbox. It reloads all shouts periodically (typically several times a minute), even if the user has walked away. And, if the user has opened 7 browser windows to different pages on your forum, and the shoutbox is on all those pages, you'll get that X 7.

It may be that, with some good planning (less frequent shoutbox refresh time, not putting the shoutbox on every page, not putting too many blocks on every page), you will be able to run a portal.
