My website was functioning fine up until an hour or so ago when I was locked out with the following 500 Internal Server Error:
The following URL no longer exists on this server:

When I click on the link, more of the same. I was able to get into the Admin section and uninstall SP 2.2. Then, my site came back. There were no errors in the Forum Error Log. My server error log is not very helpful. I can repeat this problem by reinstalling SP.
Anybody else seen this problem or can offer insight into where to look for the problem?

Not sure about the issue.
First thing you should do is ask your host about it, see what they think the error is. Its possible that they were doing maintenance at the time,
-
Have you made any changes to SimplePortal source files? Do you have any PHP blocks?
-
I don't believe my host was doing any particular maintenance at the time. It was around 2 pm local and just before noon at my host. They usually do maintenance around 7 am local. My host server's configuration has not changed:
MySQL 5.0.51a-community
php 5.2.6
Apache/1.3.41 (Unix) mod_fastcgi/2.4.2 mod_log_bytes/1.2 mod_bwlimited/1.4 mod_auth_passthrough/1.8 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 mod_ssl/2.8.31 OpenSSL/0.9.7a
SiNaN, if you recall, you had to install SP for me because of code conflicts with a previous installation of SP2.1. I had originally installed 2.2 before you fixed the bug. You made changes to the source code to make it install because I had an unused custom code block that was conflicting. I have not installed any new blocks since your work and am not using custom code.
SP was working fine up until the server error. If I uninstall and reinstall it, I repeat the error. I have not completely removed the code and uploaded a fresh release. Perhaps I should try that...
-
Ok, I completely deleted SP, downloaded the .zip again, and reinstalled. Everything seems to be working ATM.
-
If you will experience the issue again, you can reach your forum by appending "?debug=Blue Dream!" to your forum URL. Then you can disable portal completely and let me check it.

Sorry for dredging up a month old post, but I had the problem repeat again overnight. I was able to get into the AdminCP directly and with SiNan's debug. I found that the Compact Recent Posts block was causing the internal server error. It was installed in the upper right position. To identify the problem block, I selectively uninstalled the left then right blocks. When the error went away upon uninstalling the right blocks, I uninstalled right blocks until the error went away.
To make sure nothing in the script was corrupt, I uninstalled and deleted SP2.2. Then, downloaded the .zip file and reinstalled. The error repeats if the Compact Recent Posts block is installed and activated.
This error is really odd since SP has been working fine since the problem first appeared on April 10.
SiNaN, I will PM you with login permissions if you want to troubleshoot.

Hmmm, 2.2 Compact Recent block actually uses recentTopics and recentPosts function. Did you modify your SSI.php file, those functions?
You can just attach your SSI.php file here.
-
No, I have made no modifications to any of the SP files.
-
Well, I was talking about SSI.php, which is not an SP file, but SMF file. It is located in the forum root.
-
I have not modified SSI.php that I know of. Can it be modified by other scripts?
-
Maybe. Would you attach your SSI.php file here?
-
Ok, here it is.
I have to leave the computer for the next 4-5 hours. So, I won't be able to reply for a while. Thanks for your assistance.
-
Well, well. I just reenabled the Compact Posts block and everything is working as it should. Nothing has been done on my end to the scripts. The only thing different is elapsed time since the block was disabled and a few new posts. I wonder if the block is affected by a particular post, perhaps a post number, and is corrupted until the latest post is superseded. If that was true, though, I suspect others would be having this problem, too.
-
Sorry for delayed response. As I said, SimplePortal uses the SSI functions just. If you have 500 Internal Server Error, it *might* be caused by a database error in one of you blocks. However, if you don't have anything related to this in your error logs, it might be related to server too.
-
It's probably something unique to my configuration. I'll just have to wait for it to happen again and see if I can nail it down.
Thanks...
-
Make sure you have the error logging enabled and if it is a database error, it will be logged.
-
Ok, it happened again today after this post (http://www.camcorderuser.net/documentaries/dog-herding/msg2912/#new). The server error log says it was due to premature end of script headers in index.php. There is no forum error log entry. I was able to recover the site by disabling the compact posts block. Re-enabling it causes a 500 server error. I suspect I can re-enable the block after another post.
This is really annoying...
-
Ok, after some elapsed time with the compact posts block disabled...and a few more posts, everything works with it re-enabled. I have not changed one thing in the scripts except to disable and re-enable compact posts. The only error message is in the server log: premature end of script headers in index.php. I can tell this problem is not likely to be identified unless something breaks permanently. So, I will not post again unless I can find the problem and fix it.

Had the problem resurface today in both the Compact Posts and Recent Posts blocks. But, this tiime I was able to identify that it occurred in the last three posts that had embedded video using AEVA. Apparently, after a few more new posts, the offending post falls far enough down the new post chain and the problem clears (for whatever reason).
I found that my AEVA version needed updating. After installing the latest version, I tested and did not get the 500 server error on a post with embedded video. Because I cannot do tests that absolutely identify why this happens, I can say that either the problem is fixed or it is not due to the embedded video. However, I hope this helps someone.
