Title: Fate of Tiny Portal: Will it repeat?
Post by: vas on June 29, 2010, 09:47:10 PM
I felt it is going to close. Reason: Just one man to code. The development stopped and was not keep up pace with the SMF and other portal developments.

Qn: Will this happen to simple portal too, at some point in the not so distant future?

Hope it does not! :)

If it's going to happen to SimplePortal, it would have happened before SiNaN left the development team. :P

For me and most for the portals I think the major problem is the beta version of SMF 2.

I would like to have some indication that it will finally come out a new version of SMF 2 full.

[SiNaN] left the development team of SP like four or five times now. Haven't you noticed his constant changing from gray to orange until he just put on a gray founder badge? :P

Hi there!

So it seems that this portal depends not so hard to Sinans status. Thats good!

The RC status of SP2 is not so good, but new changes would be very minor. So it should not be so a problem. Changes would be like Service Packs at other software.

In order to properly understand TinyPortal's situation, you need to realize that TinyPortal was driven almost completely by Bloc. It was his vision, his work, his code and his project. He had a team and contributors, and some very strong developers on his side, but at the end of the day, TinyPortal was Bloc's product.

While there's absolutely nothing wrong with the drive of one person fueling the progress of a software, as several successful softwares have been headed by one person, there's also a not-so-uncommon fate of the lead person burning out and losing their motivation or their vision. In Bloc's case, he mentioned that he simply ran out of ways to go with TinyPortal, and the rest was just a matter of keeping it updated for the current SMF version.

SimplePortal, while the brainchild of [SiNaN], has survived its founder's departure, as ccbtimewiz has so kindly pointed out, on multiple occasions. We've had several strong developers that have pushed SimplePortal forward, and will continue to do so. This project has kept its steam for over two years now, and it's still going strong.

Perhaps a day will come when the SimplePortal Team decides that enough is enough. Perhaps they will decide to turn the reigns over to someone else, or to close down the project for good. As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. That's not going to happen now, or any time in the foreseeable future. SimplePortal is still very much alive!

Although I don't know much about the structure of TinyPortal team, from what I gather Bloc have always been one and only developer. I have to admit working alone as long as you can manage the code is more efficient but such a low bus factor is dangerous.

Here Nathaniel and others have always been around to keep things going for SimplePortal when I couldn't contribute. So it's pretty much what Eliana said above. Altough everything will come to an end at some point, I can't see that happenning for SimplePortal for quite some time. Actually there are some huge plans in consideration for future of SimplePortal.

[SiNaN] left the development team of SP like four or five times now. Haven't you noticed his constant changing from gray to orange until he just put on a gray founder badge? :P

I think I left twice only and a few months ago I requested development access to help with development. I'm not a team member currently, just helping with development from time to time.

I would like to have some indication that it will finally come out a new version of SMF 2 full.

As a developer for SMF, I can assure you that 2.0 final will be released and it's not so far ahead.

I hope so.

After almost 2 years of waiting...

While Eliana is partly correct about my enthusiasm for TP..I don't agree fully that being a single developer is a necessarily a bad thing. I have to wonder if TP would have what it is now, if I hadn't done the experimenting. Would others have done the same when working on it? Doubtful - one good example was Feline, which eventually started her own portal mod when her ideas clashed with mine. And thats even the case now, even SMF suffers from it: a project is only the sum of its current contributors. So you get fresh blood in - will they have the same vision, the same or better skills? You can't know, and the software might go in quite another direction that you had envisioned.

In any case..TP is due for a stable version onward, thats all happening with it really. But that doesn't mean I am done with portal(like) mods for SMF.  8) I have only shifted focus and programming methods, as well as the vision.

SP have the chance to evolve into greater things - but again, that will only happen if the programmers or programmers-to-be are up for it. :)
