My SP version is 2.2, can I just ulpload the installation files and run the install.php and that should work?

I've split your post to a separate topic.

1) Download SimplePortal 2.2.2 installation package.
2) Install it.

And that's all. You don't need to do anything else. Means you don't need to remove your 2.2 version, or run install scripts.
