Refreshing a single block without reloading the whole page?
« on: August 23, 2010, 05:48:13 PM »
Is there any way to have a single block refresh its content dynamically without causing the whole page to reload?

It's a radio station site, and I've got a PHP block that at any given time determines if the user has rights to connect and broadcast. It verifies that the current time falls within an approved time slot and that they do in fact have the neccesary permissions. If this is all true, it displays a button and some instruction.

But for example if 3 users are seeing the same START button, one pushes it and the other 2 haven'trefreshed the page in a while, then they'll still see the START button and that could lead to confusion "Well it said I could start but then it gave me an error"

If this box could refresh every __ seconds(probably like 15 sec, its a quick single query to the db and very simple logic), then within 15 seconds of user 1 pushing START, users 2 and 3 would see the button automatically disappear since they would no longer be allowed to use it

Another similarexample would be to use a PHP block to grab shoutcast server information(listener count, current title, etc), and again update it every 15-30 seconds to show a "live" status of the stream

Thanks for the hotscripts suggestion, found a nice little library called plainajax.js that seems to do the trick. It's all self-contained- just needs to load the script in the page <head> and then its got functions that create the js on-the-fly

Obviously I'll have to see how it works with some load on the server, but this might be pretty cool
