I followed the instructions on emulating SMF 2.0 RC2 and when I try to install, it almost immediately gives me the Error 500 Internal Server error.  Try again later.

No errors are reported in the logs.  All other mods are installing fine.  Any ideas on what I should try?

Many thanks!

Any errors reported in your Server error logs? 500 is a generic server error, it doesn't tell us anything about what actually went wrong.

Oh dear   :|
I think they're giving me the run around.  My forum is not big at all I don't think.
http://www.westknoxrc.com
I haven't had any other problems other than this 500 error on install.

Here is what my ISP 1and1 says:

Thank you for contacting us.

We double checked your site and we were getting a 500 Internal error.
We found out that your site westknoxrc.com has already reach the CGI limit.

Here are the limits for CGI on our shared hosting package:
CPU : 6 seconds @ 100%
Memory : 10240KB (10MB)
Numerical Processes : 12

However when we double checked on it the script reached to:
USER       PID %CPU %MEM    VSZ   RSS TTY      STAT START   TIME COMMAND
1849261   6838 18.0  0.5  36736 23412 ?        R    02:36   0:00
/usr/lib/\

The script should not reach up to 6 seconsd @100%.
If the processess as well reach more 12 your site will get a error 500 Internal server error.
To solve this case you need to optimize the script or you may also try
to search on how to.   There are a lot of sites on how to optimize
scripts.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Hmm, try running the install2.php file separately. You can do that by putting it into your main forum directory and running it through your browser.

Then try installing SimplePortal again (via the package manager).

So.. just to get this right, unzip the package on my local windows system and ftp up only the install2.php file into the forum directory and then open it via the browser.
After that, try to reinstall Simple Portal via the package already uploaded via the package manager while emulating RC2.  Correct?  Thanks for the help!!!

My forum is sooooo blah without this portal!!!!1!   :'(

Update.. I couldn't wait.

Here's what install2.php said:

This tool will prepare your database to work with SimplePortal. It will also fix database issues related to SimplePortal, if there are any.
•   "sp_articles" table exists, updating table structure.
•   Table columns updated.
•   Table indexes updated.
•   "sp_blocks" table exists, updating table structure.
•   Table columns updated.
•   Table indexes updated.
•   "sp_categories" table exists, updating table structure.
•   Table columns updated.
•   Table indexes updated.
•   "sp_functions" table created.
•   "sp_pages" table exists, updating table structure.
•   Table columns updated.
•   Table indexes updated.
•   "sp_parameters" table exists, updating table structure.
•   Table columns updated.
•   Table indexes updated.
•   "sp_shoutboxes" table exists, updating table structure.
•   Table columns updated.
•   Table indexes updated.
•   "sp_shouts" table exists, updating table structure.
•   Table columns updated.
•   Table indexes updated.
•   "sp_functions" table data inserted.
•   Default settings inserted.

So, then i deleted install2.php from the forum directory, switched to package manager, turned on RC2 emulation and tried to install.  Got the dreaded 500 error again.  Try again later.  :'(

Forgot to mention.. there were NO errors in the error log.

Do you think I should just attempt a manual install?  Is that the fastest route forward?  If so, when it says to "Find" and "Replace", are those Global finds or just the first occurence within each file?

WAIT.. WAIT.. WAIT..   :applause:

I'm all fixed. I think what Nathanial posted above may have helped.  I tried to install again and switched localhost to my full DNS name (I tried this several times yesterday) and this time.. it took me to the next screen to install and I installed!!!!1!

Woot!

Thanks Nathanial!!!

Glad I could help. What I suggested seems to have helped split the install process into two, making it faster.

Marked as solved.
