First you will need to add the new function to ie. /Sources/Subs-Portal.php & then you can replace the instances that were referenced. I should make a tool to do this.

Is this what's causing url avatars to show as an error in the various blocks? If so, should I replace all stristr($row['avatar'], 'http://') ? with your code?
Or is it another issue?
Thanks in advance.

Simple Portal does not adjust your favicon.ico nor does it add any HTML link tags for it. At the moment I do not know what would cause that if nothing else was done to your forum.
All I can suggest is to delete the browser cache plus history and test it again.

Here's an example of what I mean. See image attached. Tabs above have the proper FAVICON, and bookmarks or history have the default SMF icon.

I run a help desk site using SMF 2.0.15 and SimpleDesk in stand-alone mode. No access to the message boards. It has been running for several years without incident.
I have a favicon.ico in the root of the forum and it has always worked as the default icon for the forum. But after installing SimplePortal (integration mode) an annoying thing is happening with the favicon in the bookmarks and history area of FireFox (63.0.1.x64).
The proper custom favicon appears on the tab at the top of the screen, but the favicon for the FireFox bookmarks and history for the help desk have reverted back to the default SMF icon with the fulcrum and lever. I have searched my forum directory tree for any other files called favicon.* and have found none. I can't figure out where it's getting this icon from. Could it be that there's a location in SimplePortal where it's hard coded some other favicon file name and that's being used by FireFox? I've browsed through all of the ICO and PNG files I could find in the forum directory tree and have not located any default SMF fulcrum and lever graphics that would be a likely suspect. Could it also be using a JPG or GIF?
Note that this does not happen in IE. Have not tried Chrome.
Thanks,
Paul

There is no option built into Simple Portal to add page links to the SMF nav bar. You will have to do that yourself or use a mod that adds buttons/links to the nav bar. Try this one: https://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2657Use version 0.5
