Title: Internal server error
Post by: daftandhungry on March 29, 2011, 07:55:56 AM
Hi all.

I have had the same problem as Cermno1981 in a previous post and to quote AngelinaBelle
Quote
Sometimes, on some servers (like at 1and1, for example), SMF's "CHMOD" does something we don't actually want it to do -- like doing the CHMOD all the way up at the root, instead of just in the forum.

Sometimes, this happens because we have supplied the wrong path to forum root in the FTP information (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/What_is_the_local_path_to_SMF%3F (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/What_is_the_local_path_to_SMF%3F))

In any case, you should be able to connect to your server via FTP and CHMOD manually.
If you are using a windows-based FTP client, you will probably be able to right-click on the files to change their properties.

I believe this is what has happened to me after installing simpleportal 2.32, however I am at a loss how I can fix this problem.

My host has a permissions fixer script in their manage services page and I have run this twice as well as reuploading files and restoring db backups but nothing has worked.

The site is dead and I have no idea how to fix it, can anyone help me please.

Thanks.

Can you see what the permission settings are now, after you have run the permission fixer?
If the permission settings are correct, but things are still not working -- can you check the user?
If your directories belong to the wrong user, that could prevent you doing an install with the SMF package manager.

permissions seem to be ok i think, according to host they are fine, they have checked.
how do i check or fix the user/owner status?

basically I have no access to site, i can access cpanel, and ftp, but site gives the 500 error.
once i can access the actual site again I can work on making sure smf files have correct permissions for it to work again, I just need to get it to load first.
