Hi,
Is it safe to set 1 second for shoutbox auto-refresh?
How many bandwidth wasted per second if no new shout?
This shoutbox is for member only. Sometimes it's overly active that members got ninja'd by other shouts. Currently set to 10 seconds auto-refresh.
I mean, if there's something like "refresh spam prevention" (DDOS protection?) from the server, will my user got blacklisted from the server? Also, will the server got overload?
Thanks.

1 second is basically asking your server to jump at you and insult you ;D (clogging it)
I'd say no, it isn't, it overloads the server with useless requests. Shrink it down to let's say 4-5 seconds instead of 10 in "active" moments and set it to hmm 8-9 instead of 10 as "normal" setting.

The shoutbox was designed for casual shouting, not a real full fledged conversation. You could perhaps use a flash chat or something of that sort instead if you want instantaneous communication

Thanks for answers!
Okay, I am still keeping 10 seconds auto-refresh.

Okay, I am still keeping 10 seconds auto-refresh.
To me, a server admin for a web host, that is still too often for most web host's server resources allotted to an account.
In all honesty, there is no real reason to need to have auto-refresh set for anything less than 1 minute, as most people are either at the site, browsing, which means it gets refreshed anyway, while they load pages, or they are not on the site at the moment. All auto-refresh does, is runs a lot on server resources, for something that's not really needed.

I just wished SimplePortal make an auto-refresh when someone post new shout,
instead of auto-refresh for every seconds. :c

That would be asking to be DDOS'ed, think about it ;)

lol, okay then. :p

Not really.
Look at all the chat box programs out there, that do just that.
No one has had DDoS attacks via any of them.

Hmm, after a private discussion it might be true, however I have seen different things with different shoutboxes so what I say might not be completely applicable here. Not sure.
However, setting a 1-sec refresh to try to fulfill that task would *definitely* kill the server due to the crazy number of cron jobs.

Is this a feature request for the next version. If it can be implemented easily it would save a lot of resources.
I have never seen any chat program work this way though... they all refresh from the browser.
I guess it can be done - BBC updates live sporta pages without refreshing the page.
