SMF Version - 2.0 RC3
Simple Portal Version - 2.3.2
Link to my forum - http://ochtest.freehostia.com/index.php
Hi, I need help with the rss feed block provided with simple portal.
I put the feed box on the portal pgae of the forum and made the block show up only there. The feed is for the steam group of this forum.
Here is the feed that I tried at first:
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/OnCallHeroes/rss
This didn't work so I figured I would feedburn this and try it again. Here is the feedburned feed that I made:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/OCHSteam
Neither work. In the block it says "Invalid feed."
Here is the main page of the forum, if you scroll all the way down you can see the block containing the not working feed.
So, what should I do to get the feed to show? Ideally, it would be nice to have the original feed working (the one directly from steam)
Thank you,
Sib

Have you tried testing with a feed you know to be valid?

According to the w3c validator, that is not a valid RSS feed: http://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thesims3.com%2FrssNewsFeed.html

The steam group one is valid:
http://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=http://steamcommunity.com/groups/OnCallHeroes/rss
The feedburner one isn't, but when I put in the valid steam group rss feed it still says "Invalid Feed" on the forum

I tried your feed, http://steamcommunity.com/groups/OnCallHeroes/rss (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/OnCallHeroes/rss)
in an RSS block on the demo site: http://demo.simpleportal.net/index.php (http://demo.simpleportal.net/index.php)
I have also tried it on my SP 2.3.2/SMF 2.0RC3 test site.
And it seems to work fine -- just as well as http://identi.ca/api/statuses/public_timeline.rss (http://identi.ca/api/statuses/public_timeline.rss)
Do you have any errors in your error log when you view a page with that block on it?

How do I check my error log?

Here's some information about using SMF: (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=33.0;sort=subject)
http://docs.simplemachines.org/ (http://docs.simplemachines.org/)
And, specifically, the part of "admin" where you can get the error log
http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=33.0;sort=subject

Ah I see...
I just checked it out and there isn't anything concerning the RSS block. I even went back to the home page and back to error log and no error was added to the list.

A friend of my ask me to ask this question ..Is there a way to W3C validate an ATOM 3.0 (I think?) feed.
-
Hello all,
I'm blu and I look at the code on Lisa's site. Here is what the situation is.
EA's rss feed for news does not have what I would consider the standard DOCTYPE in the first line of their feeds page. Most webpages would either say traditional or strict. I went back and looked today and they are using an Atom feed. But their "Atom's" wiki says the Atom Syndication Format was was issued as a Proposed Standard in December 2005. The Atom Publishing Protocol was issued as a Proposed Standard in October 2007. Two other drafts have not been standardized.
The link Lisa has passed the validation test here (http://validator.w3.org) for xml but fails for not having the DOCTYPE. They (Sims 3) do have it on the actual page here (http://www.thesims3.com/community/news) as traditional when you view the source. But when you click to subscribe to the feed is when you get Atom 3.0, 1.0
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
Edit: typos

ok, but what about me? >.<
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/OnCallHeroes/rss

That page is also using an Atom Feed.
<rss version="2.0" xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom">
<channel>
<atom:link href="http://steamcommunity.com/groups/OnCallHeroes" rel="self" type="application/rss+xml" />
So if you use the validator (I didn't check it), it will probably pass for xml but you will get a warning and fail for DOCTYPE.
Edit:
Sib, I checked and yours does pass. Not sure why it's not working for you.
As for EA's News Feed, I'm going to chalk this up to bad coding on EA's part. I'm not surprised. They have some elements I can't fix it.
Thanks for your time. :D

Sorry. Missed the last time youreported checking your error log.
Have you had any luck showing any RSS feed at all in the RSS block?
-
I am having problems with this, too. I also get the message 'Invalid Feed'.
I have tried the feeds from:
- BBC - http://feeds.bbci.co.uk/news/rss.xml (http://feeds.bbci.co.uk/news/rss.xml)
- Guardian - http://feeds.guardian.co.uk/theguardian/rss (http://feeds.guardian.co.uk/theguardian/rss)
... and many more.
I have no error logs showing and have performed all forum maintenance tasks. The install is 2.3.3 and the SMF version is 2.0 RC4.
Can anyone help?
David

I believe this is related to a problem with the SMF functions used by this block.
The problem will likely not be resolved until the developers have the chance to completely rewrite the RSS block.
Some RSS feeds will work fine, while other perfectly valid RSS feeds will fail in the SimplePortal RSS block.
