Topic: Seperating forum from PORTAL & Chat!!!!

Hello, my name is Spokesman.  And I run a live website, with a custom theme... and many mods.

So far, simple portal has worked great for me.  When I was installing I actually had a few tests fail (the theme being one of them)... I tried to do it manually, but it did not work either.

I eventually said "screw it" and took my chances.  After the install, there was no major errors, as a matter of fact, i didn't even get any minor errors.  So far, I've gotten the hang of simple portal and I now have a functioning portal... admin works perfect.

I can add boxes, move, edit, rename... all works great!

Ok, so I know what you're thinking.... "what's the problem then?".  Well that's simple.  My portal, is only partial portal.  The forum is still on the portal page.  I can add boxes on the left right top and bottom... but I can't get rid of the forum on the actual portal page!

Does anyone have any idea what is causing this?  And what can I do to solve this?

It appears that your portal is separate from your main forum index, you just don't have a menu button/link for your forum area.

I was hoping someone would answer to my request.  Ok, so i've done some research, and apparently the install was for the original default theme.  I have fixed this issue by manually pasting code in an area where another mod was conflicting.

Fairly easy to fix...

so the portal is completely operating on a custom theme, and everything works fine

only problem i have now... is that i don't have my chatbox
any methods/ideas on how to get this on my portal?

SimplePortal doesn't currently have its own chatbox or shoutbox. Although there are many for SMF, that you could make small template edits to, so that they only show on your portal. I can help you with that if you need help with the edits.

Any ideas on how to edit it to where I can get this on the portal?  I tried an Iframe, but that just doesnt look right.... you get the dreaded scroll bar.  I edited it to be on the main index, but once i replaced it with the portal... it disappeared.

A good idea would be to contact the author of Hack's Park Shoutbox and see if they would be able to write a portal block code for their mod.

We have a custom PHP block in the portal. Using that, you can even embed an OS (Operating System) in your portal.

Note that I had to included most of the main template of that particular mod, because I had to make a few changes.

Also note that the block won't work too well on the left or the right sides, put it on the top or bottom sides.

Make sure that 'Sites where shoutBox will be printed (?action=)' setting for the Shoutbox lists every page you want to show it, otherwise it won't work on those pages, fixing that issue would have required source edits, and I'm lazy.

Might make a mod for this block, its quite a nice shoutbox.

The shoutbox itself is a very good functional chat.  You must be logged in to chat, so you don't get major spam like the other chats.  I was very impressed by it.



Question, like you said... if I wanted to add this chat to the forum.  I would have to go in the chatbox setting and use the option to add the page.  But I only get the option to add ONE page.  And when I add the "action=forum"... it doesn't show up on the forum page. 

Any ideas?

Actually I was really out of it last night, I actually made that block into a mod and then posted it in the complete wrong topic. :/

Anyway, there is a mod for that attached, it will add a 'Hack's Park Shoutbox' type block to SimplePortal. The mod completely resolves all issues with where the shoutbox is shown, by showing it on every page that the block is shown on (in short, use the normal SimplePortal block controls).
