how to instal dutch language?
« on: June 17, 2009, 06:13:18 PM »
Hi,

I have instaled this portal to my forum and it looks nice, thanks for that.

I wanted to instal the dutch translation after the instal of the portal but where do i have to upload these files?

Is there a guideline for installing foreign languages?

or can somebody tell me wat to do?

regards,
ronnie.

All our language packages on the "Downloads" site are mods that are installed via the SMF package manager. Our current language packages can be accessed here.

Unfortunately, at the moment we don't have a language pack for dutch. If you want to have a go at translating SP, then I am happy to show you how.

Okay, I'm not sure of your level of expertise, so I will make these instructions as simple as possible. Please ask questions if you aren't sure

1) Go to your '{smf directory}/Themes/default/languages/' folder on your website. Using FTP or your host's file manager (Cpanel+account panel usually have one).
2) Copy the 'SPortal.english.php', 'SPortalAdmin.english.php', 'SPortalHelp.english.php' files and rename them to 'SPortal.dutch.php', 'SPortalAdmin.dutch.php', 'SPortalHelp.dutch.php' respectively (put 'dutch-utf8' if you use UTF8).
3) Open up the new 'SPortal.dutch.php', 'SPortalAdmin.dutch.php', 'SPortalHelp.dutch.php' files (you may have to download them first) with a text editor (such as Notepad or Notepad++) and translate the strings into dutch.

The strings in that file follow this format:
Code: [Select]
$txt['var'] = 'string';
You only need to translate the 'string' part.

For example:
Code: [Select]
$txt['ignore_me'] = 'Translate Me!';
If you only want to translate the non-admin areas, then you can save time by just translating the 'SPortal.dutch.php' file. The strings from the other files are shown in the admin areas (but you could translate them too ;)).

We don't currently have an official dutch translator, so if you can translate those files and are interested then please PM me (or reply here).

My expertise is more then OK with this,

i am a sort of php nerd.

The only thing is that i do not have the time to do this, so i will use it in English.

Much quicker for me.

Sorry for the Dutch.

@marshallstan,
At the moment we are close to SP 2.3, which will change/add many language strings. Its probably best to wait until that version is released before doing a full translation.

Currently we don't have an active dutch translator, the team is discussing that at the moment, would you be interested at all in 'officially' translating SimplePortal?
