Title: Access old forum archive from new forum
Post by: CaptBuddy on May 08, 2011, 12:44:09 PM
I have a new SMF 1.1.13 forum (ForumNew) started from scratch.  I have an old SMF 1.1.11 forum (ForumOld) saved from the old server location.

I want to restore the ForumOld backup to the new server, so that it will be accessible by users.  Ideally I would put ForumOld into a Board of its own in ForumNew, and make it read only.  Second choice is to restore it as a complete forum on the server and just provide a link from the SMF Portal page of ForumNew.

I do not know how to accomplish either option.  Can someone help, please.  Thanks.

For option 1) -- restore old forum, rename some boards, make the boards read-only -- you will probably get more and better help at simplemachines.org. It is a very active, helpful community over there.
For option 2) -- You would need to create forum, restore the old forum, probably change a bunch of settings. Again, I advise you to make use of the support forums at simplemachines.org.
I think SMF 2.0 final will be coming along very soon now, according to a recent SMF developers' blog post from [SiNaN] (http://blogs.simplemachines.org/dev/432988/SMF+2.0+Update+Part+Last.html), so I strongly suggest you consider making your new forum(s) SMF 2.0
Finally, for option 2) -- creating a link from the SimplePortal portal page -- nothing could be easier. Simply create a new bbc custom block, and put that link (using the [url] tag (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Url)) in the block. You can add that block at the top of the left or middle blocks for convenience.
