Guessing by the look of it, the problem is that SP cuts the message to a certain length before parse_bbc, that leads a truncated bbcode tag that is rendered as text.

Use [cutoff] tag after the last letter you want to show up.

Here is a plug-in I wrote a while back to thwart malformed html/bbcode tags.
It will extend the cut-off to after html code that may exist at the character cut-off point.
