Title: SMF with simple portal chatbox ?
Post by: silvershark on December 02, 2012, 11:27:14 PM
Hi,

Using SMF 2.0.2. SP 2.3.5
ww.hyundaimotorclub.com

Question...

I have a permission/locked board for moderators only. I have experimented with the shoutbox in a few ways. First, I did the shoutbox on the forum pages and the other usual places, like viewing it while in messages. I didn't disable it anywhere except the portal. I thought it was to cluttered. Then I thought about a "mini" chat as we all call it on the portal, similar to what is here. But It was it's own entity. So I searched here, asked a few questions and learned about blocks in blocks and tied the two together. Great! Then I got the idea, since we are only two months live and we have a small staff, that it would be nice to be able to chat with the staff in the moderators only board privately. We had a lot of spam problems and we were constantly PM'ing or posting links in the Mod board on who we thought was shady. I got tired of this. I also want to have staff meetings so to speak. That way we can all discuss what is best for the next step for the site...but Im wasting space here now...so
I attempted, knowing from earlier on that you could have seperate chat boxes, to make a chat box in the moderator board. Well I set up a new shout box and did the advanced display and checked only that board. When I previewed, it first said the shout box does not exist. hmm, so I messed around and got it to preview. Then I hit edit block and proceeded tp the forum and entered the locked Mod board and damn, the global chatbox for the rest of the forum was still there. Tried a few times to make sure I did everything correctly. made sure the custom permissions to view the block were set, even though it is in a locked board, and still no luck. So then I went to the global shout box and did an advanced display and checked everything but the moderator board. Wouldnt you know, it still doesn't work. So to make short of a ver long story, why is it defaulting to the global chat box. The only thing that is there in the custom display in the global chat box is this "sforum,-p1" I assumed that popped up when I disabled the chat box in admin pages. Does it mean something else?

So I need to know how to set up properly, a shout box for the moderator board only.

Thanks for reading all of this. I just hate being too brief and then ten people asking me questions to fill in the blanks when I could have just typed them in in the first place

Hey, can you show screenshot with block settings from both Shoutboxes?

OK, I got the shout box in the moderator board only. Don't ask me how...it took me an hour of messing around and I must have just clicked the right button. Now, In the global shout box, it still says "sforum,-p1". I assume it is excluding whatever page "p1" is. but how do I exclude the global board from the moderator board. Right now I have the moderator chat box in the mod section AND the global chatbox in the MOD board. After "sforum,-p1" what symbles do I out next to exclude a second board. do I type sforum,-p1:sforum,-p38...which is an example. where do I find the numerical number for the moderator board and how do I add a second exclusion in the custom display box. like what symble is used to continue to the next exclusion

I finally got it to work. When I made the global chat block settings (yes it is a block) advanced, under "actions, I checked "forum", under "select boards" I unchecked the moderator board and then I used the command "forum,-p38"
To get the maoderator chat block to appear only in the moderator board, I made a page. (which may not have been needed, I was just experimenting) Under permissions, I checked off admin only and disabled regular memberss, in actions I did nothing, in boards I checked Moderator board only, then I checked moderator page under the page selection and finally in the custom disply option I typed forum,-forum.
and it all worked

I still don't know what to type to add a second exclusion to remove the global chat box from the moderator section. But my main task has been accomplished. which was to get a moderator only chat box. But if anyone knows how to add a second command after the first to continue excluding blocks and boards, please chime in. Is it, for example, "sforum,-p38 : or ; or some other symble followed by the next command exclusion

You are correct -- comma-separated rules, as explained in http://simpleportal.net/index.php?action=docs;area=custom_blocks_display

These rules will ALL be applied.  There is no "OR" syntax.
