If you are using a prior version of SP you will have to remove it first prior to adding the new one.  Don't worry because you will not lose any of your blocks.  As far as manually adding the code you will only have to do so if you are using any theme other than the default.  Try the manual install instructions from the mod page first for any custom themes and if you cant figure it out post here and I'm sure we can help.  I am also very good at adding buttons should the need arise.

Although uninstalling previous SP and installing new should go smoothly - it is advised that You backup you're SP database before doing that. Just in case.

SimplePortal 2.1 has the forum integration feature, meaning that you can put blocks inside your forum. Although now that 2.2 is fairly close I would recommend waiting for it.

Did you have any success updating your SP version? Do you stil require assistance?

Basically it should go smooth.

You should be aware that any custom mods made for SP 2.1.1 will be deleted after installing SP 2.2

For security reason it's advised that you backup SP tables/database just "in case" before doing "upgrade".

I'm pretty sure that you will have no problems installing SP 2.2.
