From "local" to "live"
« on: October 21, 2009, 03:59:04 AM »
Okay, I have a nice active SMF forum and I want SP added to it.

This is my plan:
  • A copy of my live forum on my linux test box
  • Install SP on my forum locally
  • Tune SMF and SP to my wishes
  • As the last step my take some time, get the newest SMF DB backup
  • Restore "Live" backup locally
  • Quick test run
  • Put the whole thing live

Is this the right way to go? And which SMF DB tables do I need for the restore step?

Sounds pretty good to me.

For the restore step, you will need to restore the 'smf_sp_%' tables (where 'smf_' is your db prefix, 'smf_' is the default).

If you have configured settings in the SimplePortal configuration area, then you will probaby want to copy those as well, they are located in the 'smf_settings' table. Although, as that contains all SMF settings, it is probably easiest and safest to setup the relevant settings for your main install manually through the configuration area, manually copying the settings from your local site.

My last steps would be:
  • Install SimplePortal on your live site. (unless you have made custom edits, using the package manager will be easiest)
  • Restore the 'smf_sp_%' tables.
  • Change the settings for SimplePortal in the configuration area, to match those in your local site.
  • Put the whole thing live, come out of maintenance mode, etc.

You mean the next variables of 'smf_settings':
sp_version, sp_smf_version, sp_portal_mode, sp_disableForumRedirect, showleft, showright, leftwidth, rightwidth, sp_enableIntegration, sp_adminIntegrationHide, sp_resize_images and articleactive?

BTW why don't all SP variables start with 'sp_'? That would clear things up.

Totally clear! Thanks. Now just waiting for SMF to release SMF RC2 for the ordinary people..

Those are some of the general settings used by SimplePortal, although there are more. Not sure why they don't all start with 'sp_', each major version of SimplePortal has added/changed the settings slightly, its likely that those variables were inconsistantly named at some stage.

I have made a note of it on the ProjectTracker: http://simpleportal.net/index.php?issue=298.0

This will likely become redundant later on, if we choose to make a separate sp_settings table.

That would be really nice
