Can the speed of loading the front page be increased?
« on: August 15, 2013, 03:05:38 AM »
Hello,

On my front page I have added three blocks with RSS from other sites. On the right. I feel it is nice. I want to add more. But I have a feeling those blocks with RSS are decreasing the speed the front page is loading. Do you know a way, java script maybe, which I can add so that - the front page is loaded first after that the blocks.  I have seen this one.

I am using SMF 2.0.4 with Curve and SimplePortal 2.3.5 and I am very happy with it. :)

Thanks,

You're right, RSS feeds are going to slow the page load significantly since the block needs to fetch the data from another site. I can't think of a way to make those blocks load the last.

However, you can use one of the RSS feed embed services to embed your feeds in a Custom HTML block. They use JavaScript and I'm sure they have some kind of caching mechanism implemented to make it more efficient.

Other than that, you can also try this little change that adds caching to RSS feed block of SimplePortal:

Sources/PortalBlocks.php

Code: (Find) [Select]
require_once($sourcedir . '/Subs-Package.php');
$data = fetch_web_data($feed);

Code: (Replace) [Select]
$cache_hours = 1;
if (($data = cache_get_data('sprssfeed-' . md5($feed), $cache_hours * 3600)) === null)
{
require_once($sourcedir . '/Subs-Package.php');
$data = fetch_web_data($feed);
cache_put_data('sprssfeed-' . md5($feed), $data, $cache_hours * 3600);
}

It basically caches the feed content and only fetches it once every 60 minutes. You can change the duration using the $cache_hours variable.
And slowly, you come to realize... It's all as it should be...
