Error with Subs.php at top of portal page
« on: February 10, 2010, 08:27:26 PM »
I just installed SimplePortal on the forum that I am maintaining. For the most part everything looks good, but I am getting some strange errors at the top of the portal page, which don't show up on the forum itself.

I am using SMF 1.1.11 and SP 2.3.1, and my site is located at http://www.beat-wings.com.

I'm not sure how I would go about viewing my error log (I inherited this website, and beyond some HTML knowledge I don't really know what I'm doing), but if that's essential I can try to find it if anyone has any idea where it might be.

I tried to do some googling on my problem, and one suggestion that I read was to just reupload subs.php... it seemed like that was for a situation where SMF was being used alone, though, and I'm concerned that if I upload my backup of subs.php, it will undo any changes that SP made when it was installed, and mess everything up. What can I do here?

Thanks so much for your help -- it seems like you guys have a really fast turn-around time on support requests like these, which is awesome for a free service. :D

Could you please attach that file to your next post?

Usually that type of error is caused by having text outside of the <?php ?> brackets.

Whoops, I miss read those errors the first time. :S

The actual issue is with your main index.php file, can you attach a copy of that?

Okay. :D

Here is where I may have done something stupid -- I was having trouble getting the site to work in Standalone mode, so when I found PortalStandalone.php and saw that I was supposed to link to that in the "general settings" section, I assumed that it was supposed to become the index.php file in the root directory, so I basically just moved and renamed it (along with making the changes it said to make). I'm not actually 100% sure if that's what I was supposed to do with it, looking back, and maybe that has something to do with the problem I have now. But I'm guessing you'll know.

While this line:
Code: [Select]
$forum_dir = 'forum';
Should actually be:
Code: [Select]
$forum_dir = '/home/beatw0/public_html/forum';
I don't see how that would cause your error. You followed the correct steps in using the PortalStandalone.php file.

Try redownloading the SimplePortal package, extracting the contents and then using a clean copy of the PortalStandalone.php file. It is possible that the editor that you used has put some unnecessary hidden characters at the start of the file.

That seems to have done it! I also corrected the path thing that you mentioned in your previous post, so hopefully that won't cause any theoretical issues in the future. Thank you again!

(Also, you have been so helpful to me today that I just donated $5 to SP. Consider it in your honor. :D)
