Title: I came, I saw, I fell in love and I failed...
Post by: gibby on March 24, 2009, 12:01:57 AM
Hi guys

I am very very new to all this and I found this portal and it is just what I am after -  ;D

24 hours later - 5 reloads - 26 cups of black coffee - I now look 10 years older and I just can't install it  :dead:

Anyone out there with a big heart that can help me please...

I have downloaded the latest version of smf

Thanks

Gibby

A couple questions for ya.

1) Do you have an older version installed of SP?
2) Did any of the tests fail on the install?
3) Did you enable the portal in the admin CP?
4) Are you using a custom theme?

for number one if you have an older version you have to remove it first before putting the new version on.  For number four if you are you will have to add the code to the themes files to make it work.

If you still need any help I will give ya a hand.

Hi Chris

Thanks for the reply..

I 100% admit that the problem will lay at my feet as I really know very little about what's under the bonnet...

I am using SMF 2.0 RC1 and the only mod I have installed is Aeva video mod - (that took me a day)

I tried to install the latest version of the portal.

I made the file changes and then I noticed I was getting errors across the screen ( a white screen with lots of code )

I kept trying BUT got the same results  :nervous-happy:

I guess I am doing something really dumb

Your help in anyway would be appreciated...

Are you trying to install it manually, or are you installing it through the package manager?

Sounds like you're doing it manually. Try instead uploading SimplePortal package to you're SMF directory/packages and install it using Package Manager (Main -> Package) in Forum Admin Panel.

Not the folder, the file...Okay lets start from the beginning:

1. Download SimplePortal 2.1.1 here (http://simpleportal.net/index.php?action=download) (it will be one zip file)

2. After downloading copy this file to folder: You're SMF Folder/Packages

3. Go to you're forum, go to admin panel

4. Click on Main, then on packages (last option in Main)

5. Click first option it will list you packages which you can install/uninstall

6. Clik on install (Next to simpleportal 2.1.1)

7. You're done :)

Hi

I got this error

Quote
Error in Package Installation
At least one error was encountered during a test installation of this package. It is strongly recommended that you do not continue with installation unless you know what you are doing, and have made a backup very recently. This error may be caused by a conflict between the package you're trying to install and another package you have already installed, an error in the package, a package which requires another package that you don't have installed yet, or a package designed for another version of SMF.

16.     Execute Modification     ./Themes/default/css/dropmenu.css     Test failed
      1.    Replace    ./Themes/default/css/dropmenu.css    Test failed

What can I do now?

Thanks

That's normal for 2.0 RC1. Ignore that error (it's a fix that SP had to make for earlier versions of SMF 2.0) and proceed.

You may want to go to Admin > SimplePortal > Blocks and set up some blocks there. ;)

And no worries, we're here to help.

You have to add Blocks to see them later on page. Go to Admin Panel, SimplePortal, Addblock, select one and add it.

On the Block Edit page, there is a dropdown link under Display Options that you can specify where to show blocks. The options are:
Portal (Only shows blocks on the portal)
Forum (Only shows blocks on the forum pages)
All Boards (Only shows blocks inside boards, not even on Forum board index)
All Actions (Only shows blocks on the portal and non-forum actions)
All Pages (Shows blocks everywhere)

Glad you got everything working gibby.   :D

If you need anymore help just post away.  I would suggest taking a look at the Blocks and Modifications (http://simpleportal.net/index.php?board=55.0) board to see if there are any custom block you like there as well.
