Title: about shoutbox issue
Post by: Eudemon on April 12, 2011, 11:02:38 AM
i have put a shoutbox on the portal page
if i login to my pc and go to home page directly
no matter what i type into the shoutbox it will keep on refreshing
and no matter how long i waited, nothing is being added

but if i go to forum first then come back add shout, it works

any solution to this problem? except telling them to go to forum and then come back

That is strange. What other mods do you have installed? Do these other mods include javascript?

I think AEVA Media is compatable with SimplePortal shoutbox -- I've never had a problem when I've tested it. AEVA Media includes highslide.js I don't know if you have gotten any duplication of functions there.
I am not familiar with spoiler, so I cannot answer on that one.
Can you check for javascript errors in your browser when you see the problem?

Can you give me a link so I can see your homepage and your forum, with the shoutbox? If I need a login, can you PM it to me?

I could not see the problem.
1) I logged in, using the information you PM'd me. I was redirected to the forum page (board index).
2) When I returned to the portal page, I put a test message on the chat, and saw it appear immediately.
3) I used the "refresh" button. The refresh indicator appeared briefly, then disappeared.

So I tried very hard again to replicate your problem
1) I closed all windows to kumakuni.com
2) I deleted all history and all temporary internet files, but not cookies, for your website
3) I opened a new window to kumakuni.com and arrived at the portal page, already logged in.
4) I again made a test shout -- it appeared immediately
5) I used the refresh button. the refresh indicatoer appeared briefly, then disappeared.

I cannot see your problem.

You are now saying that you are hitting the "shout" button, but that the shouts never show up?
Do you have any local js files enabled on your firefox browser? I know firefox allows that -- some javascript you have available no matter what page you are looking at.
I am not seeing this problem with Safari or with IE9.
I am afraid I am not much help.

I wasn't able to reproduce it too. What is your browser version? How do you submit the shout? Do you click on the "Shout!" button or press "Enter" key?

right now i think this problem occurs when i use firefox, my version is 4
i've tested with hitting enter key and click on shout, both don't work

Can you check if there are any JavaScript errors after submitting a shout, using Tools > Error Console in Firefox?

There doesn't seem to be any errors when I test it as a regular member. Can you test it with a regular account yourself? Do you have other people reporting a similar issue or is it something only you are experiencing?

some members were having this issue before
he is online now, so i asked him to test again, seems like he is no longer having this problem

i checked in my browser's error console but there is no error

so i think it could be some add-on?js? incompatible with shoutbox

again, if i go direct to homepage and add shout it won't show
but if i go to some other page on my forum then come back to homepage to add shout it shows

anyways i have class right now, i have to go
i'll test it with more conditions later

ok, here is a conclusion
this only happen to firefox
when i have shoutbox on portal page and my home page on firefox is my site
if i directly open ff and add shout it won't show
but if i go to some other page or other website first then go to my site portal page
then i'm able to add shout

i've had someone with same ver ff tested, his homepage is not my site and he can able to shout
i also tested with disabling some ff add-ons, but problem remains

so yeah...very odd... can you able to reproduce the issue within above conditions?
i would like to thank [SiNaN] and AngelinaBelle for the help

I have the exact same issue with latest SMF and latest SP versions.
It only seems to happen with FireFox, I also have latest FireFox.
All my members who use FireFox have same issue.

I have tested multiple times:
- going to homepage (portal) instantly results in a nonstop refresh (identically as shown in Eudemon's images) when trying to shout.
- first going to another page before going back to homepage leads to being able to shout just fine.

Ok this is how I fixed this:

- SimplePortal: General Settings: HelpDisable Portal Redirection: uncheck it
- Pretty URLs: Skip Actions List: login2,login,

Pretty URLs.  That's valuable information, la muerte.

Why this only happens in FireFox I don't know.
The answer will be in checking the URL actually used by the shoutbox, with Pretty URLs.

Why this has any relationship to login and login2, I don't know.

Is it necessary to BOTH uncheck Disable Portal Redirection AND skip those two actions for Pretty URLs?

I'm not sure, by making these changes this issue is happening A LOT less (barely noticed it anymore).
Thats a big contradiction to before in which the issue happened Every time.

Sometimes my users are still brought to the login2 area (also still happens to me), while I login with letting my browser automatically filling in user and pass. So I gues frequent human mistakes is not the actual cause. Though also this issue is happening a lot less frequently after changing what I decribed above. I have no clue what is behind this.
