Title: Cant uninstall
Post by: scotchmonster on March 28, 2012, 05:18:06 AM
Hi, I have 2.3.3 installed but every time I run the uninstall my website dissappears.
Is there another way to uninstall it so I can upgrade to 2.3.5?

I have SMF 2.0.2

Thank You  :nervous-happy:

Are there any errors in the error log?

Not that I can find. I have to restore the site and db after I uninstall Simple Portal.

Is there another way to remove it? I just want to upgrade to the new version so could I just install the new version?

Is there any red warning text on the screen before uninstall - the test page? Or does it say all the uninstall tests are ok?
If you uninstall with warnings then you could make the site disappear - other mods have change the order of the code so automatic uninstall is impossible.

What does the red warning say right before you uninstall?
Does it say there were test errors?

The warning means that other mods have moved code around so not exactly as before when you installed simple portal.
Is not a big problem if you follow simple steps...

You basically have a choice of;
1. Editing the changes by hand (replacing the original code in the files piece by piece) and using ftp if needed. If just a few lines its easy.

2.  Maybe the easiest way if many edits needed, or you are not sure what to do ..... is to run an upgrade of SMF - use the 'large upgrade file' from the SMF site (info there on how to use it). This willl replace everything with new files and clean out old ones - boards/data will not change.

After upgrading the files you will need to put all your mods back in. This might be a good thing as you can check the mods are up to date and use new ones if needed... I reinstall the site about 3 or 4 times a year  :D    - after changing many mods etc. I can do quickly now - its good training!

If you have already continued the uninstall your files might be messed up a bit - easy way is No.2.
After either way you should be able to install the new version of SPortal again.

Angelina knows best - see what she says.

thanks for the info, it's great advice.
Does anyone know if the theme I'm using will disappear if I reinstall? I don't have a copy of it to reinstall if it does.

we don't know the theme you are using.

If you drop the large upgrade files on top of you old system via ftp your custom theme should still be there. I would definitely back it up though - download the theme folder though ftp.

It might not be necessary but I often delete the old files (except settings.php, themes, avatars and attachment folders, gallery folder etc), then ftp the large upgrade files in and run it from the browser.
Dont delete the Settings.php file though.
If trouble after running the large upgrade you can use the repair_settings.php - will find that over on the SMF site too.
Sometimes you get trouble with themes missing or not working so its usually a good idea before running the upgrade to set the theme back to curve and save the settings - that way no trouble. Not sure what effect previous mod changes in your old theme might have. You can try setting up your old theme after you get the new files in.

igirisjin is correct.
Any files you don't mess with during a large upgrade won't get messed with.
It can often be useful to uninstall all mods before beginning, so your forum won't get confused about which mods are still installed.

The best way forward really depends on the total number of mods you have installed.
If it turns out you need to do a couple of manual edits to complete the installation of one of your mods, you can find information on that at the SMF online documentation, or right here.

1 thing I forgot to say...

Some mods might have changed your theme and could cause errors. If you use the large upgrade I would set the site to the default curve theme before doing it for this reason.

You could try manually doing the uninstall code changes (as Angellina said)  that the package manager cannot automate but could take a long time depending on the mods you have.

Anyway, if you are lucky it will work I think.
Another option is to check the backup folder inside the 'Packages' folder on your site. Any theme changes will be in the zip files in there. It is possible that way to get a clean version of your template. Or perhaps on your host in the admin panel if you can get an old backup of the site before the theme mightve been modded.
