Hi,
Sorry if this is in the wrong section, please feel free to move.

I am hoping to start up a forum very shotly using smf and was thinking about using  a portal? Still not sure if i should go with just a forum or portal & forum.

The site will be football/soccer site.... I can hear the groans already  ;D

AS you are probably aware i am a complete nebie to this so i thought i'd ask you guys the proffesionals.

What would a portal bring to my site?  I was thinking to use it only for foootball news stories/articles/breaking news?  Maybe a Youtube video of the day?

Does anybody know of any good football/xoccer/sports sites out there using simpleportal.  As a complete nebie with no coding skills should i stick to just having a Forum? Even then i will need to see help  :whistle:

Any help or advice would be so gratefully recieved.

  Welcome to Simple Portal and imo you have made a great choice for opting this portal system as it is the number one rated portal for SMF.

  Simple Portal would be a great tool for your project as it would let you create a nice title page and you would have many options to post various content for all sections of your forum. This includes blocks that can contain pre-written scripts such as html widgets which are available from many sport sites on the internet. The portal will also allow you to display you tube (or other) videos and place them exactly where you wish.

I appreciate your welcome and must admit to being a little excited regarding setiing my site up using this software.

I have now got hosting sorted and downloaded SMF, i am guessing this is the first step??

As you tell and I already mentioned I am a complete novice so any advice you guys can be provided is most welcome and genuinly appreciated.

I now just need to find out how to install Simple Portal
How to get a food theme
How to get the layout looking good
How To get all the good necassary mods
How to get a logo
 :D :D

Should be fun thanks again

For installing SMF just check out the installing part in the SMF Online Manual here:

You can find themes and mods here:

As for installing SimplePortal, although it's practically the same as all other mods, you can get help from our online documentation as well:

If you experience any problems regarding SMF, just make create a new topic at simplemachines.org. And for SimplePortal you can post in the support boards on this site.

The best way for you is look at the section with website showcase examples. And  just play around with the blocks to see what it ca do for you.
