Hello!
In first place, I'd like to thank you all for keeping such work and support for free. The world of FOSS is really amazing for me :)
Second, sorry if my English is not correct, it's my second language.
Well, I hope I'm writing at the correct board. I'm not looking for support with Simple Portal, but for an advise about using it.
I'm about to set up a website for a group of students from university. I'm looking for some easy way to get the needed functions working without much work, as I'm a student myself and I'll be doing this in my spare time, and also because I'm not a programmer and don't know php, but I do well reading instructions and existing info.
I must confess, my first though was of TP, which I knew before. But then I found SP and read some posts here comparing both, and now I choose SP for being simple, and that is something I want! :)
So, I'm asking you if with SMF+SP+some simple mods, it will be possible to get the features needed working easily. What I need is:
- Main page with news and maybe some articles, amongst the usual links for the rest of the site. Would be nice if these news and articles are selected posts from forum.
- Forum. This would be something really simple. SMF in it's simple form will do it, I guess.
- Download and upload area. This would be a very important feature. It would be for students download and upload academic stuff (exams and tests, notes, e-books, etc). If possible, these items would be organized within categories (courses and year). I'm not sure, but maybe this mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=992) will do it. Is it fine? There is any better for this purpose? Also, is it compatible with SP?
- Quick link to change language of all site (portal+smf). Don't know if this is possible. Will be a very useful feature becase there are some erasmus students!
- A simple calendar that allow users (depending on permission) to post events and exams dates.
I think that's all for now!
Sorry for the long post. I just wanted to know if I can get what I need before trying and then find it's not possible with this configuration.

Sorry for delayed response.
1) Yeah, we have articles feature, that shows selected forum posts on portal index with pagination.
2) That's it.
3) We don't plan a download module for SMF, as there are some mods for that. The one you linked is okay too.
4) AFAIK there is no block for that yet, but we can code if you make a request in Custom Coding board.
5) There is an Advanced Calendar block in Custom Coding board, that would work for you I guess.
