Title: Hi, I am created pages but.
Post by: USFA on April 04, 2014, 04:09:58 PM
Hi, I am created pages but noticed the search does not find the name or content.
I made a page just fine made it active and then went to use search.
It does not find it.

The only way to use pages is to link to the url correct ?
Because I can not get them to show anywhere else.

Guess I have a couple questions :)

No one home ? lol
Great program hit and miss on support  :|
Almost went with another portal but SP is so cool.
Too bad not enough volunteers to help keep it active.
I think I recall years ago it was like this when I used SP
Takes getting used too.

This might be a feature request (or even bug). I think (from a previous post I saw) the SMF search does not include Simple Portal pages. I might be wrong ...
If I am right I guess this might be fixed in future. Maybe its that way as they didn't want to change the SMF search code and indexing.

On my site, an SMF search for words on SP pages does not return any results.

And if you want to use pages, yes, you have to use their url link. In posts, blocks, or on the a menu (menu mod editor on SMF site).

Please remember its a volunteer site - nobody gets paid for spending hours here. There are so many requests. Some that are SMF related and not Simple Portal (requiring redirection), often small custom changes people want.

Many ask before doing the simplest of searches or even checking the documentation...
"Why look when you can ask and get someone to do it for you?".

Thats too bad, and would be so helpful as I am using allot of pages and are creating menu pages to get you to other pages. Not perfect but so far I still like SP better then the others. Of course years ago I used SP so used to this format and simplicity.

The larger the site, the less (IMO) you should rely on SMF internally for doing search because the amount of space it takes up creating an index.

Indexing is better then not indexing if you're going to use SMF search

Quote
Note that a search index can take up quite some space. A fulltext index is a built-in index of MySQL. It's relatively compact (approximately the same size as the message table), but a lot of words aren't indexed and it can, in some search queries, turn out to be very slow. The custom index is often bigger (depending on your configuration it can be up to 3 times the size of the messages table) but it's performance is better than fulltext and relatively stable.

USFA,

Once you have created publicly-viewable links to all your pages, then all the search engines will certainly index them on their next crawl.

You can use a site-specific google search to turn up hits on your pages.  You can even add this to your site, if you like.

The SMF search feature was designed to search only forum posts, and it would take a certain amount of work to extend this behavior.

This is correct.  SMF search cannot look at SimplePortal pages.

depending on how you display your site there is many different ways other then search to find content and depending how that content is to be found (other then search) you just need to expand the mind to find the system that works for you.

So for example, say you have resource pages
if you created a thread in the forum that explained the resource pages for your member's (could even do a list there too) that would be found via search.

For many sites, I've done like a landing page (that the link can be found on a side column) and the pages listed from there.

One way to show your pages is to create links to them.
Where I have used them, I used a custom BBC block in the left sidebar.
I have also added blocks to the main navigation menu.  There are several mods available on the SMF website which make it easy to add links to the menu bar.

Hi Guys,
I will be doing as mentioned that was the plan, but a search engine that does not search confuses people. I have a Xenforo Forum as well and the search finds what I needs anywhere on the site. These same members there will come to another site I am making and see the search does not work.

The site I have will exceed over 1200 pages, links simply will not work well alone and requires a search a search  :ill:

Its ok, its a limit I will ave to get by on . Thank you for the help.

If you are creating 1200 pages for your site, you are doing something very unusual for SimplePortal site.
How are you creating and maintaining 1200 pages for your site?

I am creating the site using "pages" in html 95% of these will be informational resources
and is why a search would have been nice.  As far as managing them thats pretty easy eat set is named and will stay in alphabetic order so all I do is go to the name and edit it in my html editor and put it back. Made 85 pages just yesterday.
See I am all old school about allot of things was making webpages and sites way before PHP was even an option. I think stopped making sites for about 6 years and technology flew past me. So making the site only way I know how. One page at a time.

Depending on what kind of content you are putting on these 1200 pages, there may be other tools that will make it easier to get navigation and search capability.

So I imagine that, by sharing what type of information you have got, you might be able to find someone who can help you out.

Hi thank you again, I am going to just keep it simple I think and make some easy access areas, that by topic people can see the areas.  I already have allot done and did a master menu over the last few days. :)
