Title: Is there a way to choose who sees blocks without using post-based groups?
Post by: WhiteEagle on December 04, 2014, 02:30:21 PM
Hi everyone,

Is there a way to choose who sees blocks without having to worry about post-based groups (ie. Newbie, etc.)? Then the blocks could be used to display ads to those groups who don't pay, and hide them to those who do.

That's the one thing that kind of annoys me with blocks, because right now I should see all blocks (including the ads), and I am not.

Thanks,
Nathan P.

Your question is seriously unclear... You say that "not worrying about post-based groups" but right after "could be used to display ads to those groups", I'm a little bit "wtf"...

Groups like: Regular Members, Guests (ie. Non post-count based groups) I want to show ads to and hide 'em from groups that are access gained through a paid subscription (Gold Member, etc.).

Just deny (not disallow) that permission to the membergroup you would like to hide those blocks from and that's just it.

That's what I've done, but sometimes I don't see the block, and I should (as I've allowed Staff, Global Mods, and Administrators to see it besides Guests and Regular Members).

Can you get us a screenshot of the permission setup for such block and provide exact details for what you expect and what happens?

I've attached a screenshot of one of the blocks I'm using to display ads (since they all have the same settings). I'd like to display them to guests and all members except the following three: Gold Member, Silver Member, and Bronze Member (because they are Paid Subscriptions and part of the deal is that they don't have to see ads among the other benefits).

I'd say that they are correct...

For the future, maybe the development team could remove the post-based groups to make it easier?

I'd totally disagree with that instead.

For permissions of this ad block set the paid membergroup as X and all other membergroups as A.

Regards.

Why if I may ask? It should have been correct anyway... Allow overrides disallow in smf...

Excuse me? I'm not attacking anybody. If you think you can support better than me then go, otherwise don't comment in such an useless way? :/
And also... I think he could have told me on his own if he had thought I was being harsh. I wasn't, I was just disagreeing with him completely.

Because, in SMF, if do deny for any group, then no matter if the member is in any other group, that will override for that member.

For example, if I set Newbie to be denied a block, and you are listed as Support Group and Global Moderator (but still have the post count that has you listed as a Newbie), and Global Moderator and support have that block, you will be denied it, due to being a Newbie.

That is why never to do deny for the post count groups.

Your not excused Ninja, you didnt make any sense.
Mr Burke explained it better.

WTF?
1) In reply #3 I said the same thing so I kinda know it.
2) The screenshot in reply #6 looked (and still looks) correct, despite it doesn't work.
3) I disagree with the request so in reply #9 I said that and that's it.
4) Like I said, "Allow" overrides disallow (which is different from deny), and that's exactly what I said in the first message. Here's the manual: http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/SMF2.0:Permissions the one you should have read already...
5) Again like I said your replies are of no use, you are the one attacking me for absolutely no reason :o

I only expanded the explanation that Ninja was getting at, as this shows:

Quote
Custom: Select this to show the Custom Permissions area. In the Custom Permissions Settings, there are three options to choose for each group.

  • A: Allowed, any user of this group will see this block.
  • X: Disallowed, any user of this group will not see this block by default. The user may see this block if they are part of a group with Allowed permissions.
  • D: Denied, any user of this group will never see this block. This overrides the Allowed setting for any group a user is part of, so be careful with this permission.

Ninja has not been out of line, in my opinion, when you, however, Tonymura, have been.

You needlessly attack someone, due to their opinion, and their trying to get more info needed to help the OP.

However, the image that WhiteEagle posted, clearly shows there's something that is not right.

The deny set to the groups that paid, are in fact not overriding the allowed from Regular Members group.
This could be a bug, or it could be that something else, another mod maybe, has done something to the site's permissions settings.

WhiteEagle, the members that are in the paid groups, are they also in any other group, besides the post groups?

Also, it is not recommended to do deny on post groups, as that would deny for anyone in those groups. Asking SP to "drop" the post based groups from the settings, is just not going to be any good, as it would be same effect as either forcing all blocks to show or to not show for post groups. It really would make things worse.

Where's that like button? :)

However, the image that WhiteEagle posted, clearly shows there's something that is not right.
When I read it I was like "huh?"
Then
This could be a bug, or it could be that something else, another mod maybe, has done something to the site's permissions settings.
Aaaaah, I was almost starting to think I had become unable to use permissions ;D that's why I said that the image didn't show anything bad in itself, besides it proved that there is something wrong elsewhere (that permission stuff works on my forum so I guess the issue is elsewhere).

Also, it is not recommended to do deny on post groups, as that would deny for anyone in those groups. Asking SP to "drop" the post based groups from the settings, is just not going to be any good, as it would be same effect as either forcing all blocks to show or to not show for post groups. It really would make things worse.
Which is exactly the reason why I disagreed with the OP's request, I didn't provide the explanation as I thought it was a bit obvious, anyway it's this one.
