Title: FTP required? Any workaround?
Post by: khigh on December 20, 2014, 08:46:31 PM
Hi all.

Y'all got me going on a preinstall question - got that knocked out and got SP going and running like I wanted to. While it was a live forum, I was actually using it as a testbed, though, for a much larger, more active forum.

It installed perfectly on the first forum and I got it set up like I want it. So I went to install it on the second forum - an addon domain on a hosting package just like the other one - same host and everything.

I can't get past it wanting FTP. The last time I did that for a mod, it killed EVERY SITE on my hosting by changing permissions and wound up having to get Tech Support for the hosting company to sort it out, so that's not on the table.

I've got a lot of work into it now, though, and I'd REALLY like to fix it manually without walking away.

Here's what it says it wants.

- to view a list of the affected files please click here.
The following files need to made writable to continue installation:

    /
    /Themes/core/images/sp
    /
    /Themes/core/images/admin

But the weird thing is, I don't even have "core" checked - just default and the them I'm using.

I see someone else asked about a similar situation down the screen a bit and it all got kind of petered out before it got resolved. I checked the server settings as told in that thread and everything matches 1:1 with the one I added it successfully on - just the domain name is different.

Can this be done? What manual changes would I need to make? The last thread petered out somewhere around "make sure the files are writable", but not specifying which files.

Thanks for looking.

Unfortunately, the only way to install Simple Portal is to either use the Package Manager (which needs FTP access) or by logging in an FTP client and doing the modifications yourself (which also needs FTP access).

If you have an FTP account already set-up for SMF to be used for mods like this, make sure its permissions are okay.

I experienced similar issues when I first moved to my paid hosting.

The company I use don't allow 777 permissions and when installing via package manager, I was often prompted for ftp access etc.

If I continued installation of the mod it would cause "500 Server Error" messages to appear and render the site completely unusable until I could get my host to fix something on their end.

Anyway, my conclusion was that the package manager was trying to write permissions that my host don't allow.

This is likely to not be the best solution to the fix but it worked for me.

Basically what I did was:

find and replace all instances of 777 and replace them to 755 in these files:
Sources/PackageGet.php
Sources/Packages.php

Use at your own risk, as I said it worked for me but can't guarantee it will solve your issue.

Actually I'm set now thanks,

That problem was on my sandbox site. I moved to new hosting for the production site and didn't have the same problem.

Since you said you got it I am going to mark it as solved if you don't mind. Feel free to post again or open a new topic if you have any other issues.
Thanks to Sayaka Maizono for linking me here.
