Title: No emails from the forum at all
Post by: ♦ Ninja ZX-10RR ♦ on March 24, 2015, 10:39:16 AM
I got a few Private Messages recently but never received an email while I *DID* have set my profile in order to receive it when getting a new Private Message. Could you check your error log and if there is something wrong with your sendMail function?
Thanks in advance and best regards.

P.s. I will also enable notifications for this topic just to check if email work at *all*.

♦ Ninja ZX-10RR ♦,

It appears to be working properly for me.
Please double check your spam folder in case your email host flagged the emails containing links as spam.

Regards.

P.S.: They are working for any other site :/

♦ Ninja ZX-10RR ♦,

The site is set to use PHP notifications and should be working. I only have it set to send me notifications from one specific board which appears to be working for me at the moment.  I will investigate this further & thank you for the report.

Regards.

Thank you Chen Zhen, I can confirm it's not working on this topic (email notification for your reply did not arrive) nor for PMs. My email provider is Yahoo (you can very much likely see it though), but like I said I have no issues with any other site, I am currently receiving emails from many smf forums except for this one.

Best regards :)

P.s.: Changed the topic title to reflect the updated issue.

♦ Ninja ZX-10RR ♦,

Ok I have adjusted a permission setting for regular members and allowed notifications for myself on this topic.
Can you reply to this post to test it please?  Thank you.

Regards.

♦ Ninja ZX-10RR ♦,

It appears to be working correctly for me whereas I can not duplicate your issue. After setting notifications for this topic I received an email with your last reply. My user settings are the same as yours for receiving notifications.

I do not use yahoo for email, are you absolutely sure you checked all incoming email messages (ie. spam, junk, etc.)? Is it possible that you somehow flagged SP's emails as spam in the past where it is ignoring any newer ones from it?

Regards.

Well he seems to now be unable to reactivate his account.
He does not get the emails, so he's in effect, locked out of here.

Could you please activate his account for him, Chen?

♦ Ninja ZX-10RR ♦,

Account has been activated after the email change. Imo try something other than yahoo such as gmail to see if that works.

Regards.

Perhaps the information in the link provided below is relevant?

https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN7253.html?impressions=true

I added the email alias of noreply@simpleportal.net  and configured the forum to now use it for sending emails.
The noreply@domain alias may work where yahoo detects the noreply text. I may have to set it to not accept incoming emails (bounce) for it to work properly.. not sure yet.

I understand your concerns but believe me with all the experience I have acquired as regards SMF I did all possible checks before posting...
So, to clarify...
-SP emails are not marked as spam, and they had never been as far as I can remember
-Any other SMF forum emails work, including mine, italiansmf, sm.org and others
-I got nothing in my inbox nor in my spam folder, I actually check it daily to see if I am on someone's mailing list that I didn't subscribe for

In order to understand where the issue can be I'll temporarily switch over to my business e-mail address and check if they arrive there.

-Many thanks to BurkeKnight for the help and Chen Zhen for reactivating my account. I've now proved myself that I am not receiving anything on Yahoo nor on my own personal domain. When I switched it it was on virtualinteractivege.com, but not working there either, so I just switched it back. Thing is that if I switch again and can't get the email I am locked out again :(

Probably useless information but emails arrive fine for me using gmail and I'm definitely on the same or lower permissions than you. If it is a problem with sp, though I'm sure there's an alternative reason, it must hate your email.

Thanks a lot for your information, even if they didn't arrive on my own email with my domain... And I never had a single issue with that. I could have blamed yahoo indeed but since they don't arrive on my custom email as well I have no idea... :(
I'm just disappointed because I can't use them :(

Hi guys, just a quick one.

Are the activation emails working here?  Just I have one of our team at http://coppermine-gallery.net/ who says he was a member here some time ago, but can't sign into his account.  When he tries to sign in with that account it tells him the account hasn't been activated. He can't get hold of the activation email.

Username gmc  I'll PM the email address if you need it.

If anyone could help with this it would be appreciated.

I manually accepted your freind's registry.
Our mail server configuration has been reconfigured and manually tested to work.
However the email may be flagged as spam in error therefore I suggest checking filtered emails.

Regards.

Thank you for manually activating...
Went back and checked spam again - didn't see anything there... I'll try some notifications and see how those work.

When I was trying to get the activation emails - I tried multiple emails...
My own domain with its own SMTP server (what it is set to now)
@att.net address
Neither received anything.

I could try changing again - but from reading above - that will require me to activate again to show the new address is valid - which will just lock me out.

I get emails from multiple other forums with no issue..

Confused???

gmc,

Sender Dependent Outgoing IP Address has now been configured and enabled which previously was the only flag showing on our email setup.
Apparently the previous setup does not work for everyone therefore we will try this setup?!

Subscribe to this thread and check emails again.
Double check your email address here to ensure it was entered correctly.
Please let me know if it is sending you the notifications.

Regards.

I verified the email address is correct in my profile.  And checked both Inbox and Junk folders...
Haven't had a problem with any other SMF forum..

It appears you are using your own host's email.
There are other factors that can cause emails to be rejected which I will look into.
ie. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/300171

I queried my ISP about email from your domain... and they are rejecting it as spam - indicating your email server is misconfigured - specifically missing 'reverse DNS' entry... They have whitelisted you for 2 months to allow time to correct.

You should have been receiving a rejection "554 Refused. You have no reverse DNS entry." in response to the emails.

While I can disable this checking - it will increase my receipt of spam... Can we get this fixed on the simpleportal.net side?   (They say many others will be rejecting your emails as well - so fixing on your end would help others too it seems...)

Here is their reply: (I masked email, ip and domain info - can provide via PM if needed.)

(I have found my host over the years (10+) to be very reasonable and accommodating - unlike many others... Their support has also been excellent... something I don't say or see often being in the IT industry.)

Hello,

Messages from simpleportal.net are rejected by one of the anti-spam systems on our servers. It is called Spamdyke. This tool performs DNS checks on the addresses of all machines that try to relay email to our servers, and if their IP address does not resolve back to a hostname, the message is rejected. You can find more information about Spamdyke at http://xxxxxxxxxx.com/faq/10/380.

Here is the log entry for one of the messages:

    Mar 18 20:30:30 serverxxx spamdyke[24034]: DENIED_RDNS_MISSING from: info@simpleportal.net to: xxxx@xxxxxxxx.com origin_ip: xx.xxx.xx.xx origin_rdns: (unknown) auth: (unknown) encryption: (none) reason: (empty)

We would recommend that you let the sender know that their email server is not properly configured. The administrators of this mail server should fix the DNS configuration, otherwise they will get rejections from many other servers as well.

Basically, all legitimate mail servers have properly configured reverse DNS records. Most spam hosts, on the other hand, do not. This is why we reject emails coming from such hosts, in an attempt to reduce the amount of spam delivered to the mailboxes of our customers.

We whitelisted xx.xxx.xxx.xx (simpleportal.net IP address) for two months so no messages from it will be rejected by Spamdyke during this period.

If you want to disable this filter, you can do this on the Mail Manager page in the Control Panel of your hosting account at https://xx.xxxxxx.com. There, just click on the "Edit global mail settings" link; the button to disable the filter is on the next page.

Please note that disabling Spamdyke will increase the amount of spam you receive.

Best regards,
Support

Yes our rdns is currently not configured properly which causes some hosts to reject emails.
I am already in the process of fixing the issue.
Thank you for the report.

The reverse DNS configuration for Simple Portal should be fixed now.
A query of our unique IP results in the corresponding mail server (noreply@simpleportal.net).

It works when I do the query in our shell (locally) but it might take time to propogate therefore it may not work on the net until a few hours transpire.
