I've just tried to install Simple Portal 2.3.1 on our 1.1.11 forum and although the test brought up no errors, after I selected install I got a message saying "An error has occurred" I selected back and got a message saying that SimplePortal had successfully installed...but there is no section in admin to configure it and I have a lovely portal I can't change!
HELP please!

Are there any more descriptive errors in your forum error log?
Try copying the contents of the languages folder from the SimplePortal package into your SMF install's 'Themes/default/languages' directory. You may need to use ftp to do this.

The error log has confirmed what the problem was...my account just didn't have permission to admin the portal :-[
